Hi all,

While trying to sort out my desktop PC in another thread went and ran CHKDSK on my laptop reading as follows with /r command.

The file mentioned is that a busted file or will chkdsk repair it, the rar does open like normal.

Bad clusters does that just mean the drive knows not to write in that area?

Read failures is this because there is something wrong with the harddrive or just the laptop is overheating?

Any help would be great since I don't understand how all of this works just yet.

Whatever the reason it is for the errors, it sounds like now is a good time to replace the HDD with an SSD or new spinner.

If the drive is still under warranty you may want to contact the mfgr or the mfgr of the laptop (if the laptop itself is stilll under warranty) to see if they can cross-ship a drive

This thing is super old at least since 2012. Just want to make sure its all good ready for a back up with no issues. Just wanting to confirm.

Update - Backing up with Acronis now. It won't back up the HDD errors to the image file will it?

The error's are not of data but of physical sector. Ergo, the OS by default having already flagged it will neither use nor copy it regardless of software used. "Errors" by default are simply unreadable pieces of the physical drive.

When you run chkdsk, I would also add the /f parameter. So I type: chkdsk /f /r where /f is "find" and "r" is repair or replace. It will attempt to move the data over to healthy sectors if there are any available. Acronis clone will not complete if it cannot read a file on a bad sector.

Ok as long as its not copying bad data/sectors into the image and the stuff that can be saved is getting moved thats great. Thank you for your help on this all. Made a back up last night before the drive dies on me now to hunt either for another 2.5 HDD or an SSD. Paying in NZD so costs abit more for me. Need 512GB minimum size replacement.

HDD sentinel is saying HDD life is still 560 days with that error on it, does that mean the HDD is fixable or it will work fine between now and that time before it dies?

HDD Sentinel is giving you a "guesstimate" on how long it will work before it dies.

If I was you I'd replace the drive ASAP.:D

Thanks I figured that would be the case, just hunting down a cheap replacement drive now. Not wanting to spend much since this laptop will be retired soon (handed down).
