Civ IV crashing

I must say, I am very impressed! I tried running his save without his patch and the game chugged (with Low Quality everything and Low Quality Textures checked) when going into global view. Going into global view was impossible. When I tried to do that, it froze for a while before I finally gave up and shut Civ 4 down. I then used his patch and ran the game again (didn't even bother to restart the computer) and fired up his saved game. It took a little while to actually start up (like before his patch), but when going into global view, it froze for a few seconds (maybe 3-4) and went into it! I was surprised. I think it's a keeper, and I may tweak it some more to work with my system.

The thing I don't like about the patch is that it wants you to check "Low Resolution Textures" box. I actually do not mind the Low Quality instead of Medium or High because it's not that noticeable, but with Low Quality Textures, on my machine, some of the leaders have no eyes (they turn into just white eyeballs)! I may uncheck it so that won't happen and test it out again tomorrow.

Hahahaha! That would be enough to convince me not to use it because that would give me nightmares!

Hahaha...yeah. The funniest thing though is that Ghengis Khan has one good eye and one bad eye with Low Rez Textures.

Haha, sounds almost fitting that he should be missing an eye. :p

I hope Firaxis/2K comes out with an official patch. Installing home-made stuff makes me nervous.

I wonder if it has to do with the amount of ram you have. I have 2GB and have played standard and large with epic and normal. The closest I have come to a crash was yesterday when I did a reload on a standard/epic game, the system locked up but I walked away for a couple of minutes and when I came back it was ready to go. Reloading is not something I normally do so I don't know if this is common. Otherwise I have played the game a ton with and without the patch and no real issues to mention. The game does like the ram though.

I was thinking that too, but the thing is that it never gets slow, or laggy, or choppy, or freezes (aside from crashes) no matter how long I play it. It'll be working smoothly, and as I'm happily taking over the world, without warning, *boom* I see the desktop. And it's not necessarily during demanding operations like zooming in and out all the way over and over again or scrolling all over the place. Sometimes it just happens when I happen to move the mouse over something or when I click something. There's no pattern that I can see. Maybe I'm not observing closely enough.

It's confusing to me. I'm convinced it's a software problem though. I've been stress testing my system, and I can't find anything that'll crash my system except Prime, but I'm boycotting Prime right now, so that doesn't count. :p
