I wonder if they picked it up from the Be auction... there were like 20 BeBoxen up for grabs there.

Well the stockholders could use the money. I got 4,000 shares myself. Did you know that a group offered Palm $10,000,000 for BeOS in payable over 10 years. That's only $1,000,000 less in cash than Palm paid in stock.

Palm refused and BeOS is going to stay locked up.

Make you want to sue Microsoft. At least root for them to take a BIG dive.

Well, back in the day, Apple offered $200 million for Be, but Gasee turned it down because he wanted more. A little while later, Jobs called Apple from NeXT, convinced them to stop looking at Be and Microsoft (Apple was considering NT), and to buy NeXT instead.

Apple bought NeXT for $400 million, and that was what OSX was built from.

Things could be a bit different if Apple had bought be. For sure, their next-gen OS would have been out a long time ago.

Coulda, woulda, shouda. Oh well life goes on.

I wonder if they would have integrated into Linux like Red Hat instead of going the BeIA route.

Tough call. Like Frogger crossing the road. Really a split second decision.

You sound like a Mac user.

Here is a Linus avitar I just saw:

I wouldn't pay that much for that box. I can get working P133 boxes with 64 Mb RAM and a 2 Gb HDD for $10. Yes, old PC's may become valuable over time. But to whom? Most oldies are trash, plain and simple.

It's quite possible that I don't understand what makes these Be boxes desirable!

Well, for one thing, they are a little more powerful than a plain old P133. They are also rare, and sort of a piece of history to some people.

Like I said, I wouldn't pay that much for one. But eBay is full of screws that pay outrageous prices for some things.

I don't know. You can do object-oriented work on any platform, even while NeXT was still around and being all "innovative" about it. They certainly didn't invent object oriented programming.

I had a whole bunch of NeXTs including a cube with a dimension board. I've sold them all now because the high $$$ they were going for paid off some bills. A fully specced NeXT is still quite useable and I believe there are still a couple of Universities over here with NeXT labs.

I think some of Next's development software was ported to Windows. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I imagine with today's multi GHz machines it would be pretty spectacular.

Jobs was on a mission to improve the programmer paradigm when his first love jumped back into his bed.

Can't say I blame him after the work over he got from Skulley.

there's not a whole lot they did to improve the programmer's job, other than making OO program pretty much mandatory, and writing stuff well to begin with.

Red- That's teriffic. It's going high on my todo list.
Right after "Add Red Hat Linux 7 to your Windows Desktop In a weekend".

I started programming in to 60's and my biggest complaint is, other than VisiCalc, they haven't made it any easier.

Well, with NeXT's stuff, you still had to write code. What do you think you do with C++ being able to do OO programming, Java making it mandatory, etc?

All NeXT has done is make it pretty mandatory, and expose alot of operating system stuff with an OO-interface. AFAIK, VisiCalc didn't have anything to do with programming. Its a spreadsheet app, isn't it?

Red- Yes VisiCalc is a spread sheet but I consider it to be a programming environment.

I had been programming a long time and kept saying to myself there must be an easier way for people to get computer to do their work without having me write code for it. The first time a saw a demo I knew that it was a way for people to use computers. Spreadsheets were very simple then but people like accountants could use to to solve very complex problems like how to avoid paying the government taxes.

Speaking of languages, do you do any assembler language programming? I was just clearing out some space and I came across a mint copy of IBM Personal Computer Software Macro Assembler 2.00 complete with 80286 and 80287 instruction set.

Another project to add to my todo list.

Harvey

No, I don't know any asm.

So, if you consider VisiCalc to be a programming environment because it allows users to do work without needing to write code like back in the day, then I guess stuff like office suites and mail clients and web browsers, etc, are programming environments too?

OOH! good comeback:D

Is it just me or is this getting to be a sorta heated discussion?

And BTW: is minesweeper a programming environment too?:p

I don't think it's an argument just and exchange of opinions.

Minesweeper no. User can use but can't alter the algorithm.

Browser I consider a viewer, but HTML is programming IMHO.

Office suites can be programmed but they've really complicated the process. Part of the beauty of the earlier software like Lotus and Word Perfect was their simplicity.

To me programming is translating a definition into a solution that can be executed by a computer.

Once upon a time their were people that were called Elevator Operators. You entered the elevator and told the Elevator Operator what floor you wanted to get off at. Then they introduced elevators that people could push a button for the floor they wanted. No more elevator operators.

Programmers are just pushing buttons for which people pay them.

Hope that makes my viewpoint clear.

Okey-dokey.

I can't belive i just said okey-dokey...

Also my first post through windows vers of Opera, verrry niiiiice....
