I'm trying to do a w 98 install on a newly formatted hd. The video is corrupt after installation. The machine freezes at the product key entry.

I'm using a Compaq restore disk on a Presario 5304. I've been to Compaq.com, but their advice hasn't worked. How can I restore this computer with working video. Step by step would be nice. Thanks

Never had lucky with restore disks.
I would copy the win98 directory on the CD to the HD and install from there.
If you need instructions on how to copy let me know.
You will need a floppy with CD support to boot.
Go to \windows\command and run bootdisk.bat.

In the directory \windows\command there are tree files xcopy*.*. Copy them to a floppy and also command.com.
Boot the machine with the floppy you created using bootdisk.bat
Place the cd and the floppy with xcopy in the respective drives them at the a: prompt write:
a:\md c:\win98
a:\xcopy d:\win98\*.* c:\win98 /e
The win98 directory will be copied to drive c:
them
a:\c:
c:\cd win98
c:\win98\install
In the steps above substitute drive letters and directory names as apropriate.
Good Luck

How do I copy xcopy*.* to a floppy along with command.com. I'm sorry I'm so dumb. Please tell me the commands. Remember I'm using a computer with a clean HD. Thanks

Copy them in another Windows computer. Where are you posting from?
Use windows Explorer to copy or DOS:

copy c:\windows\command\xcopy*.* a:
and
copy c:\command.com a:

Is the new HD already formated? If it isn't copy also format.com and before creating the c:\win98 directory do:

a:\format c:

May be some files are hidden. Make them visible in Windows Explorer -> Tolls -> Folder Options -> Exibition Modes (not sure about the english translation) -> Show all files.

I have installed windows many times. Not too easy the first time. People say Linux is very hard to install, but you know what? It can be installed from a boot CD, no need to mess with floppies and arcaic dos commands and files. Just a rant. don't care about it.
May be i'm missing something.

If making workable floppies proves to hard go to The DOS Page or Bootdisk.com for further help.
