Hey!
i read and reread the instructions dozens of times but im not sure about a couple things...
im gonna use the stuff on my p4c and a sp-94
Now im not quite sure what to use for everything, so please tell me if im right.
To clean of the stuff left by the stock intel cooler on the heatspreader, what do i refer to? Is it the same as removing the AS on the guide? (last part)
If not, what should i use?

Now to remove the AS from the heatspreader, what do i look at?
The part on CPU core of the part on Heatsink?
If it's CPU core, i plan to use either acetone and then isopropyl alcohol or directly high purity isopropyl alcohol.
If it's according to the heatsink party, then i will use mineral spirits. Whatever they are...
Please indicate which one it is :)

Next to remove the glue on the sp-94 after removing the plastic thing on the bottom i plan to use nail polish remover or acetone.
I should jsut leave the product on to evaporate, i should not wipe it off or rince it off after right?

So basically i just need to know what to do to:
remove the stuff left by the intel cooler
and clean off the stuff from the intel heatspreader (just tell me if it's considered Cpu core or heatsink... cuz it seems i have to use different products for each of those...)

Thx a lot!

Ritalin

PS: I also have a couple questions about installing the AS, please check this thread: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=257868
thx!

The instructions for the core/heatspreader and the heatsink are basically the same. I use 91% rubbing alcohol and a stack of coffee filters to clean both. Also AS tells you to use rubbing alcohol as a final step in your cleaning anyways so just use it to clean both, you don't need separate products.

I have Akasa TIM clean and rubbing alcohol works just as well ;)

Ritalin,
First of all, the heatspreader almost completely covers the top of your P4 CPU. It's that silver thing that almost goes to the edges.
Isopropyl alcohol will work well to remove the old thermal compounds & Arctic Silver. High purity is better if you can get it, but 70% will work ok.
Now take your P4 CPU & clean all the origanal compound off of it. Take your new Heatsink, remove the plastic protective tape, & clean the bottom of the heatsink with alcohol to remove any of the adhesive from the tape.
Next, put a small dab of AS on the bottom of the heatsink where it will contact the CPU. Rub the AS into the heatsink with a circular motion. use a plastic bag on your finger tip. Wipe off the excess with a clean dry rag or paper towel.
Next, apply a smal dab (about the size of a grain of rice) of AS to the top of your CPU. Spread it out so a THIN layer covers the whole top (heatspreader) of your CPU.
Next mount your heatsink. Get all the screws started & then tighten each 1 a little at a time in a criss-cross or X pattern (see below). That is, tighten 1 screw a bit, then go the 1 diagonally across the heatsink from the 1st on & keep going a little at a time until all are properly tightened.

Ok so i should spread it on the hs and the heatspreaer. I was saying because on the AS guide it only shows to put a jlittle bit and then apply hsf and it says to just wiggle it around and that;'s it. It does the spreading by itself...
So ill spread it on the heatspreader and rub it on the HSF, all good!
Next thing, i went to the closest "Homecenter" a big like work stuff shop with paint, tools and all the stuff and i came out with this:
a small bottle of acetone (dunno how pure or whatever...)
a small bottle of white spirit (or mineral spirit)
a small bottle of 70% alcohol (i dunno if it's Isopropyl... whatever that means...)

Which should i use?

For more information on the AS5, check the link in my signiture which is a link to a review of AS5 that I have written.

I clicked the first time you answered :) it's nice, but which of the products i bought should i use? for which part?

When I clean my stuff I just take whatever I can find among my girlfriends 'makeup-remove-stuff'. A old toothbrush can also come in handy...

Rit,When I used the Isopropyl Alcohol it just moved the sticky stuff around on the CPU ,IHS..When I used the Goo-Gone it came right off. Then I cleaned it with the Alcohol to remove any residue left behind by the Goo-Gone. Try the alchohol like Dave said,if it works fine.If not use the acetone, then the alchohol last. THE FANMAN:cool:

NOTE:: Intel P-4's dont use thermal pads like the AMD's.
They use a metal sticky shim type apporatice.Flat as a piece of thin aluminum foil.

So i think ill use the acetone first and the alcohol 70% after if ever stuff is left over.
Ill keep the mineral spirit for some other time.
yeah it's like a little sheet of foil.. i nearly removed it once lol :)

If the alchohol will do the job,use it.It did not work for me! If you have to use the acetone to get the job done use it.If you use the acetone, after the acetone dries completely, use the alchohol for the final cleaning before the assembly process.Always let the cleaning fluid evaporate or dry before using the next cleaning product or assembly.Thats what you get for having 2 threads running. Maybe thats why you are confused. Read some books and encyclopedias.

Lol my first idea was one thread for installing and one for removing, but then i got mixed up :X
thx so much john, i owe you a lot, and you are welcome to come over and have a pita with some falafel and stuff!
