ok guys i am home visiting my family and my mother has KII-450 mhz 64MB ram comp. It's running windows 98 and is as slow as can be. Now I know that this comp is slow but it shouldn't be this slow. I can't even play a dixv file of a project that i did for school. I have the right codecs and such just the playback is so choppy. It does like a frame a second and i don't have any idea why. So i was wondering if any of you could tell me of a [rogram that i could download that would rn and tell me everything that is wrong with this computer. Not asking it to fix it or anything, just rn some test so it tells me what i could possibly do to run tnings faster. thanks.

I don't think any programs like that exist. But there are some things you can try.

First I would check out her Temp directories and delete everything from them. Then Scandisk and Defrag that monster.

If it is still slow, try going into Device Manager and deleting the Primary and Secondary IDE channels. Then reboot so windows finds them and reinstalls the drivers for them (which will require another reboot).

If all else fails, have your mom copy her files to disk, then format and do a fresh install of Win98.

I hadn't worked on my mom's computer for about 3 years and her computer was slow as hell, and no matter what I tried, I still had to reformat/reinstall. Which is good anyway since she said it was tons faster after that.

first off all i just noticed all my typing errors and i'm sorry. me left hand is in a cast so i am typing with just one. I did defrag and i have to say i have never seen a harddrive that bad. I only wish this thing had USB so that i could copy it all onto cd rom using my external writer, but it doesn't. Basically if I try to do anything she will lose all of her business information. I'm going back up to school for a few days. i think i will grab my pci-usb card and bring it down. Then take care of this thing like i should. maybe even put a vbullet in it for her.

Check the virtual memory settings. 98 can't manage itself very well and tends to load up the virtual memory which is one reason why dropping the IDE and adding then rebooting helps.

I would also say add some more memory. I sped my Mom's rig up substantionally be bumping her up from 64 to 256.

Finally, check her disk space. If the drive is full you'll have no run to run proggies.
