hey all,

some of you still might remember me, well i havent been around here for one reason, 2 months back my comp got robbed. all except my cdrom drives and my hdd(i find this weird but still)

so i bought my old config with the money of the insurance, its in my sig. the only thing different is that i have the asrock dual-vsta motherboard instead of the dual-sata.

now when i first booted up my comp it took 4 minutes to get past the windows loading screen(with the moving bar)

i installed the mobo drivers and restarted

now it took only 1 min

but still im having a problem

before this my comp would be up and running within 30 seconds, now my comp needs around 3 minutes to start up fully

can anybody give me some input on what to do?

thanks

Drinkyoghurt

If I've got this right... you installed the HDD (which contains your previous Windows install) from your old system into the new system, and all the parts in your new system are identical to the old except for the MB? If that's the case, then I'd suggest you perform a clean install of the OS.

well the motherboard is actually the same, it is only optimised for vista(other soundcard)

i've replaced the sound drivers but still its slow and stuff, and my computer sometimes locks up...im thinkin its the maxtor hdd, performing a check now

Man, I'm confused. Your computer got "robbed" (stolen?) but they took the time to remove your hard drives, CDROM and motherboard because they didn't want them and only took the case? Or did the police recover it and give it back to you?

Nah, they couldn't have done that because your insurance company reimbursed you and a recovery would then belong to the insurance company.

Now the same hard drive and same motherboard don't work correctly? When the whole story is known, maybe we can help.

there where a few things loose actually, which i wanted to fix(like my mobo, it was out of the case).

my harddrive was screwed in with all 4 screws and so where my cd rom drives, they took all other stuff but not my hdd and cd/dvd drives(maybe out of time?)

i bought the same brand stuff cuz the insurance company handed me back money to buy them, now i got a new gainward 7800gt, i got a few fans from the money of my soundcard(audigy se). ram got stolen(generic ram) and mobo with it and also cpu, i bought 2 amd 4200+ cpu's because the insurance company gave me back almost 400(from when i bought them, now you can buy em for 200)

psu was also still screwed in, logitech g5 mouse got stolen and i replaced it as well.

but when i ordered a motherboard this time i bought the asrock dual-vsta(its the same as the dual-sata2 but soundcard is different)

i installed mobo drivers and thats it,

another thing is my computer now is just freezing and i have to reset

is there a way to still have my files instead of a clean install?

Best bet is to save your important stuff (files) on disk or external drive and do a clean re-install of the os. Then install the latest mobo drivers and you're good to go.

Ok, the Dual Vsta is close to the Dual Sata2 but not exactly the same. It may look the same physically but the BIOS is different.

If you can get your system to boot, get everything you need from the hard drive, format and reinstall Windows. You can't cheat using the same BIOS, it's not the same. It's a different size in bytes too. That's where your problem is. There is no other way around this.

You got the Dual VSTA2 because the Dual SATA2 has been discontinued.

Awsome!

I got into the habit of saving all my important stuff on CD's and an external drive incase of drive failure, file corruptions due to ocing ;)

Hey Drinkyoghurt, You can use Partition magic to create partitions and save important files on it, this way incase your os gets hosed you have your stuff backed-up ;)

No that is not the point of Partition Magic. Save your "data" ie pictures, music, web favorites, documents, email, etc to the external drive. Then format and reinstall everything ie drivers, programs, windows updates, etc. Then move your data back over from the external drive.

Also a small piece of advice. Unplug the external drive before you format just so you don't accidentally format all the data you just took the time to save :)

Hmmm, odd. I used partition magic to create several partitions: ie C:, D:, E:, etc. On C: is the OS and the other partitons as storage ( just like an external drive) I move all my stuff on those partiton and just leave C: Drive for the OS. Incase the OS gets damaged or corrupted becasue of my ocing or whatever, then all i need to do is to format C: alone without formatting the entire drive, then re-install the OS back on that partition. I guess there's alot of different ways to use partiton magic eh? ;)

I agree Partition Magic is a handy program. But since you have to format anyway you can just use the windows partitioning tool to divide up your hard drive space.
I think what your asking is can you "move" all your existing programs in there installed state and just reinstall the OS on the 10gig partition? If so then no that is not the way it works. This what I was responding to with "That is not the point of Partition Magic"

You can back up programs from your OS partition, but you're going to need to reset your shortcuts, unless you're like me and you export your all user/current user start menus on a regular basis and install everything on the non-OS partition for backup out of paranoia.

i mean i have my os installed now on 10gigabytes, nothing else

the rest is on another partition

So you did a fresh install on the 10 gig just now? Now you want to get your programs back that are installed on D: or E: or whatever other letter?

didnt install a fresh one, the boot is now way faster, 2 passes of the bar and my computer is up and running.

another thing i noticed though, it still freezes randomly...dont know why
