im a total noob when it comes to networking, but i was wondering what the easiest way to connect to my computer at college from my home (a couple hundred miles away) was. I mainly just want access to my music.

so can anyone recommend me any programs or point me in the right direction to get something set up? thanks a bunch.

Most likely it won't work as the college will be blocking access as a security measure. Your best bet would be some software that works over the internet, and even then it is a slim chance as you have a private IP on the computer and no external IP address to forward requests to your PC.

3com Lan Modems might work if you have a phone in your dorm (which is probably not the case).
With some simple setup, it will accept a call from outside, take your username and password, and NAT you into the LAN...much like connecting to an ISP, except you're surfing your network.

Dowsides:
It's a dialup connection, at dialup speeds.
The modem I have (3C886) is discontinued, but another model may be out there.
It's probably a long distance call.
