First, let me explain how I connect to the internet. I use my onboard NIC (also tried a Linksys PCI) to connect to our Linksys router that is connected to our cable modem.

Now the problem:

I can connect to the internet and download files. I couldn't connect Microsoft to activate XP. I had to call them. I also can't download plugins. It says it can't find a valid connection. WTF? Please help me!

If any more info is needed, please let me know.

Thanx,
Cyrix

First, are all of the link lights on? When you plug in the network cable, does the light marked "link" on both ends come on and stay on?

Next, do you get an IP address? Click start/run/type cmd then press OK and type ipconfig at the command line. See if you are getting an IP address that is not 169.x.x.x

If that is OK, (should be a 192 address of some sort), then type ping 4.2.2.1 at the command line, and see if you get a reply (should be: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)).

If that works, then try pinging ping www.google.com, and see if you get a reply.

If all of those work, then your internet should work ... Which one doesn't work?

Here's what happened.

BTW, both the link and act (orange and green) lights are on. I'm linked at 100mbps full duplex.

I have zonealarm installed, but it's disabled right now. Also, this happened before I even installed any software, namely when I was trying to activate windows. I'll check for ICS

ICS is disabled. Had to look under services.msc. BTW, apache2 is installed on this computer. Just turned it off. Same deal. :(

Try uninstalling zonealarm. I've had problems where it's still active, even though it's disabled. You are behind a hardware firewall anyways, that should keep you fairly safe.

It appears I can download plugins now. I just tried d'loading Java. It downloaded, but wouldn't install because I don't have service pack 1 yet.

On windows update, when I click "Scan for updates", I get the error code "0x800A138F". The error cod in the log is "0x800C0008"

Anyways, Thanx for all your help so far. :)

What did you do to get it working?

Always a good idea to leave the answer in the thread incase yourself, or someone else with the same problem runs across it ;) -- I've been saved a few times because I posted something, answered my own question, and put the answer in the thread.

I uninstalled zonealarm and that allowed me to ping 4.2.2.1 Then to get the XP update thing working, I used the "https" trick. I don't know what that changed, but it worked. :D
