hey, this is my first post, so i just wanted to say hello to everyone...well, i probably have a common question but i couldn't find the answers when i used the search function, so sorry if this is a redundant post...

here's my situation...i recently purchase an AMD K-7 1.3G...i have not overclocked it yet because it seems it's running a little hot:mad: ...during idle the operating temp would be around 37c to 38c...i used to be running a k-7 1.2 at 1350...but my idle temp was usually around 27c and max load around 35C...i was wondering if my cooling became ineffective or just need to upgrade my cooling??? here's my layout:

front- 2 x 80mm Antec Case Fans 26 CFM
rear - 2 x 80mm Antec Case Fans 26 CFM
1 Exhaust Fan Card
CPU Heastsink: CompUSA (seriously, it's a good HSF) All Copper Heatsink with a 38 CFM Fan..box says it's good up to 2.0G

what would you recommend i do...thanks in advance...

Firstly welcome.
Secondly there is nothing wrong with those temps. you have a good case & your set up seems fine. Don`t worry & go & enjoy.

Welcome to the forums. I think myself and anyone else hear would agree that those temps are nice. What is your room temperature. With a temp in the high 30's you've definetly got some room for overclocking. You usually don't have to worry until you get up near the high 40 low 50 degree range. I'm guessing that the 1.3 K7 is an original athlon. I'm not sure what the temps are are like on these chips but i know that my tbird runs a little warm w/o good cooling.

My guesstemate would be that you will get around 1.48 to 1.52 range. Of course with the 100MHz FSB you'll wanna up that. I would down the multiplier and up the FSB until your temps reach about 45C. Then head for some more cooling, maybe a water block would suit you good.

A couple of other tricks are to lap the heatsink (use sandpaper around 1000 or 1500 grit) and make it flat and shiny. Also make sure you got a good amount of Thermal Paste, maybe some Arctic Silver 3.

Good luck with the chip.

the two in the front are blowing cold air in....(and i do mean cold, it's winter here and i don't use my heater just so the air being pulled in is as cold as it can get) and i have two going out... and the exhaust fan is under the video card pulling air away from it...

i know that the kill temp is around 90 for the cpu...although, i don't want it too be running at almost 40C at idle...i'm guessing max load would be around 47-50C...in my book that's kinda high...i was hoping to get my max load temp no higher than 40C...i'm not new to overclocking or computers...but this one has got me stumped...is there any HSF or fan's you could recommend to bring down my temp..acko, thanks for the input...

before i forget, the system temp is never more then 27C...don't know if that will help...

Well there are alot of good HSF's! I would recommend the new Thermalright AX-7. You can get one of these without fan for around $28. I would use minimum 50CFM fan, 80mm. This sucker is a top rated heatsink and should/will help your temps alot. If you want to oc, I suggest a good HSF. You could try lapping the one you've got too.

whoa, i thought i put all the info needed...guess not, heh...well, here goes, the heatsink has already been lapped and the room temp is around 30-33C...yep, it's cold in my apartment...ummm, what else...i want to keep the all copper heatsink and just change the fan...noise isn't a concern...i just want my cpu temp to be under 40, full load...
edit* also, it's running at 133MHz clock speed FSB...(133x10)...

also, i'm thinking of mounting two 120mm fans directly to the bottom of my case...is this a good idea or would it just be pointless...the idea is to get the incoming air blown toward the top at an accelarated pace...(i won't put on exhaust on the top, i just don't like seeing hole in my case..i'm a minimalist, like that...go figure!)

i would not worry about those temps, my AMD K6-2 450 runs at 60 degrees celcius idle!!!

So dont worry my comp has been like this for 2 years!

before i got it!

I could be wrong, but I swore I've read on here before that you might get better temps by having one 1 fan brinign in air and 2 exhausting (or was it the other way around?)

temps

Welcome to the forums, Arcane!

Your temps should be fine... maybe the little sensor got moved a bit when you put in the new cpu, or maybe it was not making very good contact with your old one. I think you typo'd your room temps. Isn't 30-33C near 80F? Not very cold IMO. Hope you enjoy the discussions and invaluable resources in the overclockers forums.
