The great USA!
I'm having some cooling issues with my new build (in sig). My temps are around 45c idle, over 70c under load, motherboard starts beeping like crazy. I am not overclocking and all motherboard settings are on default. My case has 3 fans, 1 in front (blowing to rear), 1 in back (blowing out) and 1 cpu fan (blowing on the cpu). As you can see in my sig I am using a xp-90 HS, I tried the default HS from Intel that come with my cpu and as you can imagine, temps were worse.

Need some help here guys, give me some ideas.

I don't do P4's but it sounds like you need to reseat the heatsink. I assume you're using AS5, but make sure the chip is covered with a very thin coat. People tend to put to much. When you take it apart, inspect the hs and cpu to see what type of contact you were making. Sometimes heatsink are poorly machined and lapping is really needed to make a good contact with the chip. Your assumption that an xp90 should be keeping your cpu cooler sure looks like a solid one, but what kind of case temps do you have? Antec Sonatas are known for quiet, but not necessarily for good ventilation. Lastly, how powerful is the fan on the xp90. All of these things will effect your cooling. Oh, and never place the computer case in a hot oven! LOL

With that kind of change between idle and load, it sounds like a bad seating of the heatsink to me. You do have thermal grease, right?

Most likely he is using way too much is my guess. Reseat the sink and reapply little less paste

maybe, but there are entire threads on the xp-90 & co not having flat bases, it could be poor thermal contact due to some deformation of the base. if you take the hs off hold a straightedge up to the base to check for flatness

Sorry I left some info out of my original post. I did use as5, a small drop about the size of a grain of rice. The xp-90 I reseated a couple of times. and when my temps jump up, the cpu temp is high, but the pwm temp is worse, it's what sets my mobo alarm off.

if you have access to high-grit sandpaper (1200+) i'd highly suggest lapping the base down to the bare copper (its nickel plated)

have you defaulted your settings back to stock? do you get the same temp. results by doing this?

also, what fan are you using on the xp-90?

Interesting find....
Out of curiosity, reading another post in the Microsoft forum about a user having problems with hyper threading, I decided to download the Intel Processor Identification utility and this is the results....

I just wanted to see if MY HT was working, which it is, but as you can see it says the chipped is overclocked, I have done NO overclocking on this chip. I am using the motherboard at default settings (mobo in sig). So going by that picture, what do I need to turn down???

I think I will try the lapping, cant hurt I don't guess, auto store just around the corner :D.

Default settings...I haven't overclocked the chip, didn't plan on oc'ing, but look at previous post by me.

The fan on the cpu is a Mad Dog, not sure about the rpm's.

Update...

I guess the Abit boards are set to run a little oc'ed at default. I changed a few settings and got the chip back to stock, but temps are still very high.

Well I'm off to the auto store, get some sandpaper.

From what I could find on the Mad Dog coolers, the fan is either 70mm or 80mm..

You need a high pressure 92mm fan for the XP-90, to get good cooling results..
Prescotts require a thermally modded case too.. Meaning it needs to have a duct on the side panel to feed cool room air to your HS's fan... :)

For those temp swings his base should be concave and noticable when you look at it.

In my opinion he has a bad seating AND no case air flow..If he takes off case side , reseats sink and has a fan blow air into that case I bet he knocks off a lot of temp..

I just had an AMD here that was running at 88c lol..Bad heatsink mount and no air flow.I put a Stock MP heat sink on it and panflow case fans and knocked 43c off the load temp..

lapping....

The cpu fan is 90mm :), although Mad Dog brands suck from what I hear. Here are a few pics I thought I would share of my lapping project, I hope it helps, cant hurt. Notice in some of the pics that the center of the HS wasn't getting lapped at first, that tells me it was concaved. I was lapping on a flat surface. Lapping, just saying that word sounds funny :D. Also I learned a few things when doing this, it's best to rinse your sand paper frequently for better contact. I used 220 grit, 400 grit, 800 grit and 1000 grit, 2000 would have made a mirror finish I believe, but I didn't have any. I still had good results though. I havent mounted the HS yet, will do that later. And thanks everyone for the feedback.

I'm back, LoL. :D
I just mounted the HS back on, CPU temps are around 43c-45c idle, 55c with load, so that part is MUCH better. I'm running Throttle Watch and Cpu Burn-in in the background right now. Still having some high temps with the PWM, what can I do to make that better? I think the CPU temp is going to be ok.

You said the abit board had slightly higher settings, you might also eant to check and make sure the voltage isn't upped. oh btw nice lapping job.

I'm not to familiar with the bios, so what should I look for? Thanks for the comment.

Also, is there any way to cool the mosfets? Do they make heatsink for them?

I also need 3 GOOD fans, any input? 2 120's and 1 90mm.

Bump...
I didn't want to start another post, but could someone give me some good fan suggestions to help with my temps. They have gotten better since the lapping, but could be even better...I think fans will help, I got cheapo's.
I need 1 90-92mm and 2 120mm.

Thanks

get a Panaflo 92mm Medium (considering you don't really care bout like 30dB), and look for some Sanyo Denki 120mms for your intake/exaust...
btw, what case u got?
