I have a new Soltek motherboard heading my way as we speak.

Currently I am running an EPOX 8KHA+ but due to the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 not fitting that motherboard it's being put out to pasture.

So...I had planned on moving my 3 sticks of Corsair 2400 over to the new Soltek.

Then I thought..."That Soltek supports 333 Dram"....

Now...I'll put this question out to everyone here.

I have been running at 163 CAS2 on the Epox without a hitch.

and at 135.00 per 256 Meg the new PC2700 Corsair is rather expensive.

Would buying the PC2700 be a waste of money???
Would I really be paying just for the heat spreaders..???

Or is the new 333 DDR worth the $$$ ??

for example....if the PC2700 will run at 175 MHZ without an additional memory divisor.....and I can get the PCI and AGP to work with a 5x divisor then it MIGHT be worth it to buy a couple of the PC2700 sticks.

Thanks in advance
Larry

Well, FWIW, I'm running an Intel P4 1.8A OC'ed to 2.3Ghz so this may not be apples-to-apples, but:

I'm running a stick of the Corsair 512Mb PC2700 RAM right now. I set it up to run 340Mhz (I think thats 170FSB for you AMD guys-right? It's 128FSB for me. Thats 128 x 2.66 [3:4 Memory divider] = 340Mhz). I ran my box for 10 hrs using Memtest 86 set to run all 11 tests, looping. The RAM ran perfect at CAS2, 2.5V. No errors. Haven't tried pushing it any further...yet.

I got this stick from Mwave for $205. That's considerably cheaper than 2 x $135 for 2 sicks of 256. Might want to think about that.

There's a review here that claims they got 376Mhz out of the 256Mb PC2700 Corsair.

I'd say go for it, but look at getting a 512Mb stick in place of the 2 x 256 sticks.

From What I've read 2* 256 will overclock higher than 1* 512

As a rule.....

But I'm still not sure if the 2700 Corsair is worth the upgrade from their PC2400 stuff....

I guess unless I hear otherwise...I'll keep the Corsair that I have and buy a Vid card with the $ I was going to spend on the PC2700 mem...

I suggest you, first of all, to check how far your PC2400 can go with the new Mobo, and only later evaluate the PC2700 ;)

I think that Larry must be getting the same board in that I am (Soltek SL-75DRV5).

I just ordered mine with an AMD 1600 XP retail chip.

I'd like to keep my memory price below $100 shipped, so can anyone suggest a 256MB chip that is a good value for the money?

Thanks!

Well, for the best price, you can take a look on PriceWatch for Crucial PC2100 unbuffered (not ECC), that generally can work up to 140-150Mhz, but not @166Mhz!, or better go with Corsair or Kingmax PC2700, but for the last one you have to look for the modules with 5ns chip ;)
