What bothers me about Microsoft's view of Windows 10 data collection is that it is ostensibly necessary to preserve the stability, security, etc of the operating system.

This was not the case with Windows 7, as data collection such as the items that are collected by default in Windows 10 was opt in. In Windows 10, its not even opt-out, its opt less.

Windows 7 is perfectly stable and secure (for a Windows system anyway) without ever having had mandatory data collection. I see Windows Embedded 7 in hospitals, airport terminals, etc.

My prime issue is Microsoft's fundamental dishonesty and scare tactic usage. "It's for your own good!"

When it is clearly for advertising revenue.

false, windows 7 had data collection not as through or as much and people didnt make quite the stink about it.

also think about how long ago windows 7 came out it wasnt very logical from an internet maturity perspective at the time.

its not so different from other issues these days, someone posts something on social media or on some small site it gets shared 100000 times on facebook and everyone is freaking out about it all the sudden. kind of like the statues and flags that were never a problem till like.. umm a year ago? the internet is like a hive mind lol one person freaks out over something stupid everyone does. it was such a simpler time before everyone was on it 24/7

I don't give a F... to MS stealing my personal data directly... The WOrld Company gets them through my mobiles calls and SMS, my email provider, my web browser, my credit cards, my GPS, my LinkedIn account... And I am sure I have forgotten a bunch (no, I don't use FB!).

I could not care less about my (public) personal data... I am no thief, no rapist, no murderer and no terrorist (that lives a few options though :D).

yeah, i been saying it since page 1. but apparently i just rant and babble, idk. either way stopping them is fun too. what little it might help.

The "nothing to hide" argument is a false equivalence, though

Its like plugging one hole on a strainer, worrying about W10 like this...

One hole at a time... LOL
Did some one come up with a list of things to block at the router? I'll go back through the last several pages and look. If I find such a list I'll put it or a link in the first post. Trying to keep the thread convenient for those who just want effective/simple fixes. The rest of the thread can be for the hardcore anti 10 crowd.

Added the Hosts file link (and a mention about other Windows OS' on the page) with thanks to wagex. Highlighted it with a little color as a new addition.

For anyone coming to the last page looking for solutions-go back! The first post gets updated with all the relevant info we can gather. The rest of the thread is mostly why Windows 10 will be the fall of Western Civilization, if not all of humanity. :)

yeah those hosts files can be done in windows in sys32/hosts or added as a blocked list in pfblockerng in pfsense.
link on how to configure pfblocker for those who have pfsense but havent used pfblocker https://www.tecmint.com/install-configure-pfblockerng-dns-black-listing-in-pfsense/

While this doesn't address my UAC or Auto Maintenance concerns this does help with windows update. The Mini tool is nice and removing cortana is helpful(the bat script needs works, wish i knew the author)

So next if I can figure out how to make auto maintenance less painful and then fix the UAC BS, I'd be set. UAC is by far the most unlikely to fix but auto maintenance can't be too hard for me to find out.

can you explain the issues with uac and auto maintenance for those of us who have no idea what you are talking about?

Apologies, @Alaric linked me here from another thread.

UAC when set to not dim will very often not show up on top be behind stuff so i have to alt tab everywhere to find it.

Auto maintinence I would like to make a bit less "auto". I cannot have performance hits when working and cannot have the system coming out of sleep once it's shutdown. the time it's left idle is not very high.

Disable it. It is literally one of the first things I do.

same, when the deal pops up hit the link down at the bottom and drag the slider down to none.

as for the auto maintenance what does that entail? i dont notice any auto maintenace? you mean hdd defrag? windows update? i turn the schedule off for defrag, and set the window to install widnows updates to when im not on or around the pc.

Control Panel\System and Security\Security and Maintenance open the maintinence tab and look. When it runs it executes tons of commands, and determines what needs to be done and what doesn't, including driver checking and updates, defrag analyzing and running if fragmented, chkdsk, file cleanup, ect ect

If you have your OS on a SSD turn off defrag IMMEDIATELY. No way, no how, should you defrag a SSD. Change update settings to prevent Windows 10 from EVER updating drivers if possible. The biggest complaint and the most headaches from W10 come from M$ screwing up drivers and breaking $h!t. That's what Windows 10 does best. Turn off chkdsk. Unless you have a problem you don't need it. Set a schedule for file cleanup (Twice a year. Maybe. Unless you have a 32 GB HDD.) Otherwise, just do it manually.

System is equipped with 2 SSD's and 8 HDD's, defrag is on automatically for non-ssd's. maintinence picks at random what it wishes to run

Ahh. I'll dig in to my W10 today and see what kind of havoc I can wreak on "maintenance". That's pretty much why I keep a W10 around, anyway.
