Could an OC-ed Barton beat a 3.2 P4?

Do you think if I overclocked my new 2500+ Barton to faster than a 3200+ it would out perform my friends 3.2GHz P4?
His RAM isn't very good, does that give me a chance?

yes it could beat it but.. not in everything, they cpus have different advantages and disagvantages in different apps, for example a p4 3.2 has fantastic encoding speed, while at 3200barton will not be as fast in that the barton will beat it in something else like gaming but, if you barton is really clocked real high it will crush the p4 3.2 in most things(if not all), well thats what i think...

anyways what are you planning to clock it too anyway

youd probably need to get your barton to like xp3400 rating or 2.4GHz at 200fsb to match that 3.2c amd overrated their bartons. the a64 3200+ is like 25% faster than a 3.2c however LOL

I was hoping for minimum 2.2GHz and would love to get 2.4Ghz or ABOVE.

First question - does it matter? If its just an e-penis thing then it doesnt really matter.

Secondly, a Barton 2500+ will probably hit 2.0GHz to 2.3Ghz without too much trouble, perhaps talking along the lines of a 3GHz P4 at least, possibly 3.2GHz.

There is a chance, the key to beating the P4 is through the FSB. If you can get your FSB up to 233MHz with very fast memory timings, then a 2.4GHz Barton will win the P4 quite easily. If you can scale some more to a 250MHz FSB and 2.5GHz or more, well, you are well on your way to match an overclocked P4.

Just get your buddy to do a UT2003 benchmark then blow him into the water with your Barton... Just don't let him throw a hyperthreaded benchmark or video encoding benchmark at ya...

Not that may people actually encode video... the standard stuff like office apps, web and games will put you on an even footing though.

The Barton could do Maths much better then the Pentium4 but the Pentium4 performs better for games, I mean, just push the FSB on a Pentium4 to 250MHz (1GHz) and a Barton to 250MHz (500MHz) and the memory bandwidth is still limited. Also the pipeline the for Pentium4 is more complex and gets better at higher speeds so the Barton overclocked could beat a stock Pentium4 but a Pentium4 overclocked could require some more thought on memory bandwidth :).

My 2.5 cents, always giving more.

My friend paid about $170 for a P4 2.6C...I like to think that my 1700+ I bought several months ago for $60 will beat it, seeing as it can run at 2.6GHz too. :D

*Edit - yes, it'd definitely an E-Penis thing.

probably because prescott incoming (just see in an italian online shot a 2.8c prescott, don't know if it's avaiable but it costs identical to a p4 2.8c) and prescott have 1mb L2 cache, so probably amd make a64 new pr based on prescott performance... could it be?

First, as David said, does it really matter that much?

Second, your 2500 barton will have to be at around 2.4-2.5Ghz to beat the 3.2 in most tasks. Considering the 3.2 is NOT overclocked. But, I can gaurantee you that it will not beat it in every task, such as things like encoding where despite having a long pipeline, it still goes fast and pretty much relies on the frequency. Also, the quad pumped FSB on the Intel will give him an advantage in some applications that benefit from memory and memory bandwidth although, you said he has crappy ram, and if he is not able to run it at 200Mhz, and you can, you migh have an advantage in that. But to answer your question, you will probably need around 2.4Ghz. It shouldn't be that hard. I got my 1700 around 2.4 or 2.5 and 175 FSB with crappy ram.

Where do you get off saying its 25% faster?

25% faster huh? ooooookkkkkkkkk sure

yeah no way is it 24% faster, but like people said it is all in the benchmarks that you throw at it. Just keep running UT and you will be fine. Other than that get a nice watercooling setup and be happy!
