CPU core voltage unstable at default

I am not sure why this is happening, but at a default voltage of 1.75V, my cpu locks up all the time at startup although that is the AMD's specified voltage.

So I increased it to 1.85V and everything was stable. Now my CPU temp rises to about 63 degrees while processing. I have installed two extra extractor fans, on top of my super orb Heat sink.

I don;t think the voltage change affects the temperature directly, but I had to apply a patch, PCI Latency patch v1.0 as my system locks up everytime i do file transfers above 100 MB.

Can anyone tell me the reason as to why I need such high voltages? And why my CPU heats up so much?

System configuration
ABit kt7A
1.1 G tbird
256 MB Hyundai RAM PC-133
30 GB Seagate UDMA ATA-100
250 W PSU
Super orb dual fan
SB Live !value
3com ISA network card
elsa gladiac mx
ricoh cdrw/dvd combo

Yup can someone possibly provide an answer here? I have a 900Mhz TBird Non OC-ed at 65degC! The VCore was set to DEFAULT and it was actually 1.825V as detected by the software Asus included in its CD.

Don't those Firebirds run at 1.7 VCore?

My guess is your power supply, you need at least a 300w to be running all those extras. Increasing the Vcore DOES create more heat. I'm guessing your PSU is having trouble allotting power and your mobo is demanding a higher vcore so that it has "at least" a stable voltage to run at which is why it poops out on the 1.75 setting. I had an orb and i'd hit 60c at load on some hot days, it also chipped my core >:| With the WBK-68 id be lucky to break 45c on the hottest of days and this is with a higher vcore/clock than b4, im actually cooling better with more heat. The orb sucks over 1ghz imo, and it's dangerous to install/uninstall.

With such high temps you either must have a high ambient temp or the HS is not square on the CPU die.

Well I think its neither

Firstly I checked, and the super orb is ok for amds up to 1.5 GHz.
And the HS was applied onto the chip accurately with paste.

My only conclusion is it may be the PSU?
Ambient temp is not it, cos Im running two pcs but this one seems to have a higher temp.

Perhaps your psu is not delivering enough current at the rated voltage.

I know it says its rated up to 1.5 ghz, but i tell you from experience that it dosen't cool well enough. It should really be rated to 1 ghz imo, but disregarding that it's got a dangerous clip. Someone else mentioned this : "It's funny how ppl spend so much on the processor, then skimp on the equally important components like a HSF" If your adamant about using the super orb, it needs alot of help cooling; you will need to blow cool air into the case or start getting used to temps above 50c :/ I strongly suggest getting a better HSF so that you can rule out the temp issue altogether..

I couldn't agree more, ORBs suck for highend CPUs.
I think it was Eds or Joes article that mentioned the CPU/HSF price thing.

If you must have an orb, try the DragonOrb.

If I don' t get the super orb..what hsf do u recommend? Please note and I am at a budget and can't opt for really powerful hsf...one that does its job should do.

I'm in canada, not sure the prices where you are, but the Globalwin FOP-38 is the same price as the Super Orb here (28$). And i guarantee you that spending an extra 15-20$ on your HSF now will save you headaches later, and allow you to rule out any heat issues. If i was on a budget i'd spend 20$ less on the cpu and OC it. 1.33 +super orb < 1.2 + FOP-38 , and those cost the same :)

On the cheap, it's hard to beat the FOP 38 or my favorite, the quiet FOP 32.
