Actually, not ALL chips above 1.2 are factory unlocked, although the vast majority are.

It should be simple enough to look at the chip and tell. If the L1 Bridges are not cut, it is unlocked. If it's already installed, try changing the multiplier. If you change the multiplier, and the speed actually changes at POST, it's unlocked. Otherwise, go find a sharp pencil.:p

On the contrary I was once told it was 1.2 and below. I have a 1.1 that I used the pencil method to unlock. You need to check the L1 trace on the processer. If the L1 circuits are cut then it is locked. I found this link extremely helpfull when I unlocked mine.

Unlocked my girlfriend's 1.0 T-bird with defogger... must be 1.2's and up.
