Why do the fan openings in the case have those grids rather than just an open hole? I suppose to keep small fingers from being nicked? Or maybe pet tongues?

Wouldn't an open hole provide better air passage than having the passage blocked by the grid? I'm no wind tunnel expert but it seems to me that just cutting out the grid would increase air flow substantially.

Comments welcome.

becasue it's cheaper to drill holes in it than to have an open hole and have to suply a fan guard, most people cut holes in these places and use a fan guard which doesn't affect the noise and air flow so much

I cut a duct in Iwin case WHAT A ***** the stupid indentation so you can open the side I tried to POUND it out still not done . Oh by the way if anyone can lend me an anvil so i can finish this thanks
I did drop 3cwith just the fan and 6-7c with duct on fan .also I read somewhere on the front page a while back that said those holes block up to 60 % of the air flow
