Alright, either my MSI K7N2 motherboard or my AMD Athlon 2000+ is fried, so I am purchasing a new motherboard and processor (both are under warranty - whoo hooo!!!)

Anway, my question is this:
I know these boards support 4x DIMM Dual Channel DDR in 266/333/and 400 (what does the 266, 333, and 400 mean? I know it is the speed or something)

My question is will these boards support older 2x Dimm. In other words, are they backwords compatible? Can I drop my old Ram in this 939?

See, I am having to buy a new motherboard and processor and would like to jump to a Socket 939, but if I have to buy new memory atm, I will not be able to do so.

If not the 939, then what about a 754?

Help please, I need to make a decision this morning.

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Oh, one more thing!!

Any suggestions on a motherboard for a 939 chip?

I hate Gigabyte, have had good success with MSI, and people seem to love Asus?

Thanks again.

266/333/400 is how fast they are
266 is pc2100 operates at 266mhz
333 is pc2700 operates at 333mhz
400 is pc3200 operates at 400mhz

your old ram shoud work with 939 as long is DDR,(it would be easier if you post what ram do you have) though you should check with mobo maker becasue some board are picky about what ram do they take.

Thanks

My computer isn't currently working atm, and the receipts for the memory are at the office. They are DDR, but not sure of the speed.

I just want to be sure that my old 2xDDR will work with a new Socket 939.

Thanks again,

Terry

What are type Nforce 3 or Nforce 4, the only difference between them is that nforce 3 uses agp and nfroce 4 use pci express and is aslo available with sli

Nf3 good choice would be MSI and ASus
Nf4 good choice would be Dfi and MSi

Agp

Would have to be AGP, since I have a 9800 Pro AGP videocard.

Thanks.

Can anyone else confirm that my old RAM will work in a 939 board?

You need to know what speed it is. Memory is backward compatable, to a point. If you are getting a Mobo that uses DDR400 (PC3200) and you have DDR266 (PC2100) it will work, but the performance would blow bubbles. (Not the Clown)
Try to unload the old ram if it is less than PC2700. Then get some decent PC3200.

While money's tight and I am getting my other components replaced (thanks to manufacturer's warranties on this stuff), I just want it to work.

Thank you so much for your post though. I will check what type of Ram it is tomorrow and post for everyone's thoughts.

Thanks again,

Terry
