6 month ago I bought a 30 gig western digital hard drive. now I think its dead. when I boot up my puter it see's it but when it's about to go in to windows the hard drive turns off then back on.
which couses windows not to boot. I tried to fdisk it but it dont see the drive. I put a older hard drive in and that one is fine. so is my new one dead?

right when its going into windows it stops spinning and starts right back up again. like someone turned the power off to it. and back on. and I cant reformat it becouse fdisk dont see the drive but my bios does. its hard to explain. I dont know what you meen by zeros at the end.

Did you buy the drive new? I believe WD includes diagnostic software on the setup disk, but if not, you can probably DL some from their website. Also, it should have a warranty if it is biting the dust. From your description, it does sound like a drive on the way out.

well I ran the software for it (dlgdiag 4.12) and it gives me a error code of 0207 which has something to do with my cables. so I tried 3 new ones and it still says the same thing.I guess it's dead. I emailed WD and all they said was to check if I had the cable in right. I was hopeing for a little more from them. and I did by it new but I cant find the receipt. does that mean I cant send it back?

sounds like it is dieing on you, what i ment by writing zeros was the diagnostic disk that came with the HD should have a feature that says write zeros to disk, its like a mega-format but if its not detecting your hardware with that disk chances are the thing is toast

As long as you know the model and serial numbers from the drive, you should be able to RMA it. On their site should be a notice on how to RMA. Also, as long as its a toll free call its easier top figure your problems out over the phone.

Try wiggling the cables and see if you can get a better connecton. Try booting from the good drive and hooking the bad one as slave. If it will boot with it you can probably format in windows!

Check the jumper settings - make sure it is set up correctly as master or slave. Put it as master on the first IDE cable.
