Western Digital Special Edition

I am very impressed with the Western Digital SE drive. I picked one up as soon as they were available. If you have the money the 120GB comes in at $299.00 and what makes it nice is the 8Mb Buffer. (ATA-100)

Because of the buffer it is 30% faster at delivering data than a standard 2Mb ATA-100 drive. If you're looking for ATA-133 you might want to consider the Maxtor Fireball Plus AS Liquid Bering Drive.

G'mornin' jay ... "without cooling my 80 gets around 45C MAX"

("my 80") Are you refering to your HDD?
What HDD are you using? DiamondMax 80?
What SMART software are you using?
Can I get SMART software from Maxtor's website?
Is it part of the PowerMax utility?
Thanks bud. I gotta make some coffee.

edit:
OK. I see there are several freeware apps that read SMART info.
Thanks for the heads-up.

the HDD I am refering to is my Maxtor 80G 740X-6L with the fluid dynamic motor

Software i am using is Speedfan 4.02

currently working to have a silent PC

Dont think you can get the SMART software from MAXTOR

I alos need some coffee :)

If you find any GOOD software freebies that read SMART, wana give me a shout. Always looking for another good app.

Nice, found this thread right at the right time :p

Ive been tryin to decide for a long time between Maxtor and WD
I think I'm guna go with the Maxtor D740X
I just cant decide weather to get the 40gb or the 60 :p
20bux price diffrence....

Maxtor for faster seek times
WD for faster data transfer.

80G is the best bang for your buck :) then 60....

Also if you go MAXTOR thier are 2 different versions of the 740X-6L
the "J" serries and the "L" serries
"J" has the ball berring motor (loud)
"L" has the fluid dynamic motor (quite)

the fluid dynamic motor also cost an extra penny or two

UK?

Doubt it, but I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a fluid bering 80Gb Maxtor drive here in the UK:confused:

But then who will hear either of them over the fans anyway.

i have to say that my 60gigger d740x non-fluid bearing drive is almost silent. compared to my old maxtor it is silent:)

I would go maxtor.

Today I am returning a 3 week old WDC 80GB 7200. It has bad sectors, inexcusable for a new drive. It keeps crashing win2k and win2k keeps making chk files outta my data. WDC has great customer service and a good rma process....there is a reason for that IMO....WDC sucks. I've RMA'd more WDC drives and any other type of drive with IBM a distant second. However, I have yet to RMA a Maxtor drive. Going to exchange this WDC POS for a Maxtor right now!

i like my quantums i cna get them for 50 bucks for 30 gigers saves money and rusn great if ur intrested in these let me know i only got a few extras brand new

Just got my 40 GIG D740X fluid bearing today...Man I'm glad to have my baby back ...i've been useing a 533 mhz compaq ..lol.. well at least it gave me time to tear apart my puter and give it a nice new paint job..:p

Not L, but J.

Whats the noise like on a normal Maxtor 133 drive? I think the 'L' version is about to hit these shores, but I doubt in 80Gb sizes, so I can't be bothered to wait and I'm forced to get a 'J' drive :(

I think Maxtor got their fluid bearing tech from Quantum, which if true means that those HD's are whisper quiet!

I used to use Western Digital, not only were they loud but I could always trust on them breaking at the 3 year point...

Now with my Quantums Fireball AS (bought those when they were getting bought out for a great deal!) I NEVER even hear a peep from them...
