Is there any way to disable the touch pad when an external mouse is plugged in, but have it automatically reactivate when the mouse is removed?

Or, is there a way to get it to not click when you tap it? When my girlfriend types on her keyboard, sometimes her wrist taps the touch pad and relocates the cursor or brings a background window forward. Any way to disable that??
