Hi, I recently upgraded the PSU and GPU of my Dell XPS 8100. The system stats are as follows:
- CPU: Intel Core i7-870
- System chipset: Intel H57
- Memory: 6GB DDR3
And the upgrades:
- OCZ StealthXStream 500W (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341012)
- Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB Dirt 3 Edition (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102945)
For the setup, I have a 2x4-pin Molex to 6 pin PCI-E adapter as one of the PCI-E inputs for the graphics card. Also my monitor is VGA and the output of the card is DVI so I’m using a VGA-DVI adapter.
I have noticed the system crashing when:
- Playing a game (has occurred within 5-10 minutes, has also occurred after 20-30 minutes)
- Browsing (once)
- Right after exiting a game to the desktop, where the desktop may show for a second and then the system crashes (has occurred after about 30 minutes, playing and exiting 3 different games but it only crashed after exiting the last game)
When the system crashes, my monitor goes blank, the computer shuts down, and then tries to turn on again, making a bunch of noise. It seems to turn itself on and off a few times trying to turn on, at this point I turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes. When I do turn it back on again, it may or may not go through some Windows repair/diagnosing stuff.
Here is some temperature data gathered right up to the point of a system crash while playing a game (everything looks fine to me?):
