I just bought a new MoBo, Ax-7, Delta 68 CFM, and a Sidewinder Rheostat.

The Delta fan has a connection that plugs into the MoBo, but the Rheostat has connectors that look like they plug into the PSU. Do I splice the wires on the Delta fan to fit the Rheostat?

How do I connect the Delta to the Rheostat and to the MoBo?

Please help. I don't want to fry anything on the first MoBo in 4 years.

The new 68cfm Deltas must come with a motherboard connector instead of the mating Molex connector like mine did. Looks like you'll either have to buy an adapter or cut and solder. I believe the adapters are available from many places.

So my choices are:

1. Buy a MoBo connector to Molex connector adapter, then connect the fan to the rheostat. then the rheostat to the PSU.

2. Just splice and solder the fan/MoBo connector -> Molex Connector on the Rheostat -> PSU.

Does that sound about right?

So the Fan doesn't connect to the MoBo anymore if I use the rheostat? If not, is there a way to monitor the fan speed?

Don't draw the power to run the Delta off of a M/B Header. Take your power supply to the rheostat then to the Delta. Some Delta's have a seperate yellow wire (Tach) that goes directly to the M/B fan header to monitor RPM's. The Delta Fan usually reqiures a 10watt rheostat.

I took the Delta off of my system because of the whine. The fixed blades sure increase the fan pressure, but also increases noise level. I didn't like mine even with the rheostat on low.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, one of the wires that attach to the MoBo should be the fan speed monitor. The Black and Red I'm guessing should be the power, so I can splice those 2 wires to the Molex connector on the rheostat. That leaves the Blue wire that should be the Fan speed monitor.

How's that sound?

Thats right, the blue (sometimes it's yellow) is your fan speed monitor, you hook that up to your mobo, and you hook your black and red wires to the 12 Volt connection on the Molex connector (Yellow and Black).

Now here's an answer I can understand (nice and simple). Although Sidewinder Computer seems to have used a Red and Red/Black wire, whatever wire coincides with the Red on the PSU side should be the power/Red on the Delta side, right?

Ok let me try to lay it out.

You got your Delta Fan with a Black, Red and Blue wire.

You got your rheostat with a Red wire and a Red/Black wire.

You got a Molex connector from your power supply, a molex connector consists of 2 Black wires, a red wire, and a yellow wire.
The Yellow wire is your 12 Volt, and the Red wire is your 5 Volt.

So when you plug in the rheostat to your power supply, the red wire on the rheostat should line up with the yellow wire on the PSU Molex.

Then you take your Red and black wires from your Delta Fan and plug them in respectivly to the rheostat.

Then you take your blue wire from your Delta fan and plug that into the right most pin on your 3 pin motherboard header (if you want fan monitoring).

is that what your rheostat looks like?

If it is then its super simple.

Plug one side into your PSU Molex

Then on the otherside

Take your red wire from the dela fan and hook it to the outside connection of the free molex, then take your black wire and hook it to the inside connection of the same molex.

Then your blue wire goes to the mobo.
 
Thanks for the help guys. The rheostat works GREAT!!!

I first ran the Delta fan blowing away from the CPU w/o the rheostat and you can hear that thing in my entire house.

After I reversed the airflow to blow into the heatsink and attached the rheostat, it sounds a lot more tolerable.

I haven't O/Ced this yet, but at idle it's running about 30~31C and under load about 35C. That's at the lowest rheostat setting.
