Did I just smoke my Barton?

I modded 2 XP2500s ...did the L5 mod and was trying them in the primary CPU socket on my K7D to test their MP status.
I cleared the CMOS first and had fsb jumper on 100.
Started rig and shiiiiiiiiit....smoking mama!!..The smell, the horror, the horror.
OK...so is this cpu fried out or what?
What the sam hell did I do here?
I had thermal grease on, and cpu fans on OK.

I tested the other cpu and it boots fine. Although why does it say its MP1800? 1.4 mhz?. Shouldnt it say MP2500?

default multiplier on the 2500 is 11 if you have the one that works at 166 fsb originally. so it would default to 11 x 133 which is 1800+ MP

now for the smell if its anything like what i smelled before its probably dead. mine smelled like burnt plastic when i lost one. i hope that i am wrong in this

hmm well if the board worekd with the other CPU then you can rule out mobo/psu being fried so it is most likely your CPU. Maybe you mounted it wrong.

This is just an observation, don't take it as flaming.

If you didn't know that the default multiplier and bus settings would give you 1800+ as your processor rating, why did you even bother doing the mods? You aren't experienced enough. No shame in that at all, we were all once very inexperienced.

Although it most likely wasn't the mod that fried your cpu, you still fried it because of lack of experience. Next time you go building a computer or doing a mod, post all your questions about it before going ahead and doing it, it will save you time, effort, frustration, and most of all money! We are all willing to help here, and I just hate to see someone ruin expensive computer equipment! There are tons of threads on the correct way to mount your heatsink and all the precautions to take.

I thought I had heatsink mounted correctly.
The cpu was in for perhaps 15 seconds only when I saw smoke. The damage/scorching on the cpu is right next to the "raised" portion on the cpu.
Is that all it takes to fry a cpu? A few seconds and poof!?
Using Thermalke7 Volcano fans and copper heat sinks.
Thanks for the info guys...

I' m a firm believer in "You learn by doing"
I had to learn the hard way...oh well.
It's not gonna break me.

Much less than 15 seconds. Usually, within a second or at most two, the CPU is dead. Just take your time during HSF installation and triple check everything before applying power.

Bummer:bang head

i fried two bartons on my k7d, i was testing some different configurations, and in my great feat of stupidity, i just pressed my vantec Aeroflow on the cpu die by hand, i did not latch it, and about 3 seconds later, i heard the horrible sizziling sound of sillicon melting.... it only took 3 seconds, and an idiot like me of course, i will NEVER do that again....

$200 experement.
