Does anyone knows whether the NF7-S V2 reads the temps from the die or socket and that if they are reading correctly or high like the version 1.2 was suppose to be doing.

just don't know whether the temps on my NF7-S is correct or not.

The NFS-S 2.0 displays the in-socket thermistor temp in the BIOS and via Sandra. It does, however, use the on-die temp reading for overheat protection (ask me how I know ;)

Contrary to popular belief, the in-socket temp does not read high. I tried this experiment (with my brand new 2500+ Barton):
- set overheat protection to 85C
- turn off CPU throttling and disconnect HSF fan
- watch BIOS temp reading, and wait for power-off

The BIOS reading hit 67C before the board powered off. This is 18C below the on-die reading. Assuming this is a gain error, the on-die readings on my board will be about 8-9C below the on-die reading at normal operating temps (around 45-50C).

BTW, I pried the in-socket thermistor up before installing the CPU to make sure it makes solid contact with the backside.

You actually tested the overheat protection? Youre brave or dumb as hell :p Glad to know it works though :)

Maybe brave and dumb.

Actually, there was no risk really - temps rise really slowly - took a few minutes to reach 67 in the BIOS. Heck, I even tested it with no HSF installed, just for the heck of it - it shut off about 3 seconds after power-on :)

thanks vanderls..

i did not what to think before with all the hearsay going round about the temps.
hope your cpu and mb still working ok after doing that
good idea about the thermister i'd never think to do that in too much of a hurry to get it in and running.
