I have a SFF case (Antec Aria) and i want to put either a P4 2.8 800mhz FSB or a P4 2.8 Prescott in the GigaByte GA-8IG1000MK. As you may know, the Aria gets pretty hot. Is the Prescott that much of a difference in speed to risk the temp.? Can i get some benchmark scores also with the diff? thanks

aharpro26, If you are going to use a prescott and are going to cool it with air be prepared to make some mods to your case( see my signature)

Prescott or Northwood??? I guess the question is what do you want to do with your computer?

Most 2.8e overclock well as most people have been able to reach 3.4 to 3.6 with little problems. Prescotts do not start to shine and are actually a little slower in the benchmarks when compared to a compariable Northwood.

But when overclocked a prescott .......

My 2.8E has been very reliable at 3.59 and except for the heat issues which I have been able to overcome by adding a duct along with a 80MM fan mounted inside. My CPU runs at 42C at idle and 55C under extreme loads using the stock Intel HSF which is lower than some temps that I have seen people who own northwoods report.

If you just want " Plug and Play" go Northwood
If you like to play then go Prescott

Here is a comparison I did several months ago. I used RAM with BH-5 chips in the 2.4C using the 5:4 ratio and tight timings. The 2.8C and 2.8E both had PC4000 RAM and used the 1:1 ratio. Anyway, that should give you a good idea of how they stack up. The Prescott runs lots hotter and needs watercooling to get high overclocks.

COMPARISON OF 2.4C, 2.8C and 2.8E OVERCLOCKED TO 3.4 GIG

Sandra CPU ALU:
2.4C/3.4=10722, 2.8C/3.4=10363, 2.8E/3.4=9998

Sandra CPU FPU:
2.4C/3.4=2941/6413, 2.8C/3.4=2947/6469, 2.8E/3.4=2783/5864

Sandra memory bandwidth:
2.4C/3.4=6166/6160, 2.8C/3.4=5876/5791, 2.8E/3.4=5919/5919

PCmark2002 CPU
2.4C/3.4=8436, 2.8C/3.4=8437, 2.8E/3.4=7190

PCmark2002 memory
2.4C/3.4=11450, 2.8C/3.4=10955, 2.8E/3.4=12549

PCmark2002 HDD
2.4C/3.4=1379, 2.8C/3.4=1299, 2.8E/3.4=1279

PCmark2004
2.4C/3.4=5323, 2.8C/3.4=5259, 2.8E/3.4=5222

3Dmark2001 (Radeon 9700 Pro at default speed and settings)
2.4C/3.4=17056, 2.8C/3.4=17138, 2.8E/3.4=17129

after i first read your sig and followed the link i thought you were joking. is it real or what?

Sjaak, Its real, This mod lowered my temps from 60C at idle and over 70C under a load at 2.8 to 42C at idle and 55C under an extreme load at 3.6

nissmo300, depends on how nice you want to make it(do you have a clear sidecover?)

I made mine for about $15.00 and really did not care what it looked like as I do not have a clear sidecover . I used an 80MM fan and a 3 inch rubber drain pipe coupler that I purchased at a hardware store.

I have seen kits on the web that are a lot nicer( and more expensive)

Here is some pictures of my mod

If you like I could give you the directions as it only took about 15 minutes to complete

hehe nice. i knew ducting could do alot, but that much :0

When i get my window later this year ill make a plastic (see-through) duct :)

so is this really 'the' solution to prescot?

Sjaak, I don't know if it is the " solution" but it worked for me and many others who I have shared this with.

Like I said before my Prescott was at 60C at idle, 70C undle a load and this was just not satisfactory!!! I did not want to go the "water cooling" route as this brings on another set of problems.

I firmly believe in the "KISS" principipal

I have decided to go with the 2.8C and put the 9T370B1M3 (speeze 70mm) with AS5. I'm hoping this will keep it cool for such a low price. will it?

Would it be even cooler with the ThermalTake Spark 7+ WITHOUT the sheet of metal on top? I mean Grill haha

definatly, lol. Its amazing what some people consider 'fan grills' when theyre real 'air stoppers'
