what is the differance between an XP and an MP. I haven't been able to find a singe thing differant except that MP's officially work in a multiple cpu environment and XP's don't. On the other hand I've heard people saying they are getting XP's to do it also. Any idea's.

Your right, the MP is guarnateed to work in duallies. The Xp is not, and if it's a new processor will not work in duallies, with the bridge trick on the L11's (I think). Older XP's were SMP Compatible . You can tell by the last bridge on the L11. If it's a pit, it's not SMP. Then you have to fill it like the L1.

The other difference is the MP comes factory unlocked so you are free to move the multiplier

And that's about all, just a few bridges, the core of the processor is the exact same, and as far as i know, don't perform any better.

I happen to run a DUAL XP 1800 on a Tyan S2460.

ALL Xp chips will work in a dual board and function exactly as an MP because thay are MP chips..{Read all the docs on the 2 chips you will find no differences}

APPROX 1 month ago AMD started to cut a L5 bridge on the XP so it would not run in dual mode.This cut was done on the XP 2000 and XP 2100 and thus far no one has said the XP 1900 and lower have this bridge cut.

ALL PREVIOUS XP CHIPS DID NOT HAVE THE L5 CUT ALL PREVIOUS XP CHIPS WORKED PERFECTLY IN A DUAL BOARD.

The simple fact AMD cut this bridge proves XP is SMP by default.No one has tried it yet but if you cut the L5 on the MP chips I am sure thay too will no longer work in dual mode.

This is a very old debate that has hundreds of people using XP chips in a dual board and all of us can confirm the systems run flawlessly...................................................

To elaborate on the above post by diehrd, I can confirm that some XP 1600's have this additional L5 bridge cut. I just got another one about a week ago with it cut. This is an easily remedied situation though, unlike the L1 bridges on the XP's you don't have to "fill the pits". A simple appllication of some sort of conductive paint will work. I hope this helps.

I am currently using an older "uncut" XP1600 along with a new one with the "modified bridge" on my Tyan 2460 with no problems.

Good Luck!
