OK well i have an install of win2k3 enterprise edition running and i was wondering if i could run my own dns server so i could make up crazy domain names like... teamlosi.dude or something like that... i have installed the "DNS" server on win2k3 but i am having a hard time setting it up... can someone help me along ... i just want to be able to do it even if its just going to be for my home LAN use.

thnx

Well yes, and no. You could create them with local significance easily, but not internet accesible.

You just need to add them to the reverse lookup zones.

You could do either forward lookup zone or a reverse lookup zone depending on what you need. If you want to be able to ping teamlosi.dude and have it resolve to an ip address, you'd use a forward lookup zone (this is probably what you want). If you want to do a nslookup ipaddress or a ping -a ipaddress and have it resolve to a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name), then you'd use a reverse lookup zone.

Also, as Erik said, that domain name would not be routable across internet routers. If you do want your dns to be routable across the internet, you have to register a domain that uses a legitable TLD (top level domain) such as com .net .org etc.. through a registrar, have it register NS records to point to your home server(s), and then create that zone on your home server(s). You would also need to make sure your ISP is not blocking port 53 which most home internet service companies do to prevent your from hosting servers.
