Do i have PSU issue? does this sound like i don't have enough watts?

For some reason when i turn on games at higher RPM's on all my fans with the fan controller the games always load up prety crappy. And when i turn my RPMs to prety low the games run at really great FPS... is it possible this is due to my powersupply?

I did several test with some of the fan's on low and then ran it, and then when i turned up a fan. the graphics just went downin FPS.

PSU: Thermaltake 480w PurePower (i noticed all thermaltake powrsupplys was on the sticky list of NOT to get except for the 500W PurePower.... so i guess mines on the list on one not to get)

System: Athlon Barton 2800 @ 1.925 Vcore (multi on 11.5)
Ram: Corsair PC-2700 but it is running at 210 FSB with the DIMM volts set on max 2.9V (timings 2-2-2-11)

Fans: 5 80mm tornado fans, 1 92 tornado (on a Thermalright SI-97A) and then the 2 80mm fans in the powersupply.

1 Fan controller. by Vantec, it can turn the fans to fully blast to completely off. but it still doesn't run the fans at REALLY low RPM sometimes, so its still kinda louder then i want it to be. and then i just have 1 DVD burner drive with no other drives. and 1 Encore TV tuner... 1 AGP Nvidia 7800 GS OC, and then a SD Audigy 2 Value.

does this sound like my powersupply can't handle it? it gets annoying how i have to turn down my fans and restart my computer each time i want to play a game. Or sometimes when i mess with the fans i have to restart the computer with the fans at a certaint setting before the games will load up correctly and play at high FPS. I just want to make sure i don't wast my money and that this sounds like the problem.

well, if im not mistaken the way how those fan controllers work is using resistance, so it disperses maybe 30% of the electricity as heat and only 70% of it goes to the fan. so it would still be using 100% of the electricity.

but it could be using a different techniques of slowing down the fan, but due to your system problem, i doubt its the above system, probably something diffrent...

im guessing its your psu, because your vid card requires a lot of electricity, so when it fails to get it, it goes down the toilette, i can test this with my vid card by unplugging the molex cables from it, and then bam. i get 2 fps, plug it back in, i get 70. (but of course i have to turn off my computer in between, i really dont want to ruin my new psu)

Probably the power supply, but only because it's a mid-low quality unit, not because you don't have enough power.

I see you have a 7800gs. Have you tracked the temperatures on the card while gaming? The 7800gs has a known *warm bug* issue where it will throttle to 2D clockspeeds when temps are below 38°C.

Try setting the 3D fanspeeds on the card to 2D fanspeeds.

I highly doubt that it is your PSU.

Actually, I'd bet a case of beer that it is NOT your PSU and it's your graphics card throttling.

36-37 when iam just using the desktop.

and where exactly do i set the 3dfanspeeds on thecard to 2dfanspeeds?

Bingo, there's your problem. Your video card is too cold. You need to let it heat up before you game.

Use Rivatuner to slow down the fan speed.

I think someone owes me a case of beer now.

wow, excellent find. i had no clue a vid card even ran that cold lol, my vid card idles at 47c with a vf700-cu lol.

(another solution would be to do a volt mod and overclock the heck out of it, get more performance, but more heat, but then again. more heat in your case, the better)

Actually, from the sounds of it he has a 7800gs with a g70 core. Those do not volt mod well and the max OC achieved is limited by the core itself, not voltage or temperature.

hopefully by the summer it will never give me a problem. right now the case temp is in the mid 20's C and the processor with THIS HIGH of an OC and the fan speed turned off. is still running at in the high 30's.

can't wait untill the summer is back... to darn cold right now. i wish i had some of the rigs you guys have... and just UNLEASH the highest OC. but my motherboard and componets are all holding me back :(

and then this Nvidia isn't helping out any either.... its so weird... this has to be the first i ever heard something being TOOO COLD.
