Hey guys,

Can you give me advice on which Dremel to buy? I have about $100 to spend on a nice set. Which bits/tools do I need with it for case modding/hobbying, and which dremel (rotary, variable speed, etc.) would you recommend?

Thanks,

Xive

Some would say dont go for the dremel. I however am not one of them! :D

Now if your willing to spend that much on a dremel kit, it can be done.
First, get one that has a variable speed adjustment, trust me, a major need here.
Second, Get plenty of extra bits, wheels, etc. Dont get to many, you will have them forever, just make sure you have a few extras in case you screw up like I did the other day and bend the shaft.
Third, I would suggest getting the extended flexible arm. I dont have one yet, but plan on it in the near future. Makes things much easier when your working on smaller projects. Like fine detailed windows or fan guards or hell whatever...
Do all of that, and the money will be gone before you can sneeze!~!

LoL

Lucks to yeas!~!

IFMU

ah yea, one more thing. Get the rotary tool kit as well. If you use it to cut plexi or whatever like I have, it also comes in way to handy!~! :D

I use a dremel that i got from sears, not sure of the brand, but the key is RPM's if you have a metal cause i suggest a 35,000 rpm to slice that baby up, but if its a plastic case go lower because you dont want to melt the plastic, also you want to use a cutting wheel for metal to do your modding and you might want some sanding wheels for any rough edges and a drill bit piece to drill any pilot holes you might need (if you dont have a regular drill that is) for 100 bucks you should be able to get a nice little kit that has just about every attachment known to man, rule of thumb for modding especially if its your fist time, TAKE YOUR SWEET TIME!! my roomated modded his 1st case awhile ago and it didnt put much effort into it and it looked well, horrible (sold it on ebay though heh suckers)

Good luck and post some pictures when your done!

make sure u get a dremel with at least 15,000 for cuttin plexi and 30,000 which is usually good for cuttin metal without breakin the cuttin disk. also dont get a battery operated one if u dont like to wait for them to recharge for 45min every 10 min. however the corded ones are usually the ones who burn out do to too much stress for running them long periods of time.

The one I got is the Dremel MultiPro 3956-01. It has a variable speed from 5,000 rpm to 35,000 rpm and comes with 75 accessories including the extended flexible arm that IFMU was talking about. It also comes with a keyless chuck, which is so nice. :) It cost $80 at Lowe’s. I would also recommend that you get some more cutting wheels cuz this kit only comes with 4. I must say that this is one of the best tools I have ever bought. It is definitely worth the money. Here’s a pic of the one I got:

I would recomend a good quality Jigsaw once you have drilled a 10mm pilot hole you can do anything!!!! thats just my preference & I do work in the sheetmetal fabrication industry.
