as i typ this i'm using a superorb with 1 single drilled out hole and nipples,
current:
cpu-duron 700 @ 1125 and 2.5 Vcore
m/b temp: 24C
cpu temp(RIGHT NOW):51C
water: cool to the tuch(not warm)

now sitting beside me is a silicone cocked heatsink. The fins are aprox. 1.5 " high with a 1cm space in between the fins.
Now! do you guys think that this will cool better than my drilled orb at the same cpu specs? keep in mind that i still have to wait a couple of days for the silicone to dry(made today).

I am not sure. I have not seen the approach you are taking done. If would think cooling through the baseplate would be better as you cool closer to the source of heat, don't obstruct airflow, and have more surface area in contact, IMHO. But that is of course debatable, and only numbers will prove otherwise.
