drive not accessible, need help

I have a 20gig maxtor with 2 partitions(ntfs) on it, c and d. C is the os, d is for other files. In winxp, d shows up in my computer but is not accessible-"incorrect parameter". In fdisk the partition shows up as fat16(was ntfs). I used a demo version of active partition and the files are still there but can't retrieve them in the demo. I booted with dr.dos from the floppy drive and can't get to either hard drive from that. Can anyone help? I would like to retrieve the files.
