I've just bought an extra 1GB for my A7N8X-E board (Nforce 2) - in addition to the 512MB module that was already installed. I've found that if I put them in different memory banks they will be accessed as dual channel. Obviously this seems a bit odd because they are not equal in size - but I have read that the Nforce2 will access the first 1GB in dual channel and the last 512MB in single channel mode.

Is there any truth to this? Will I see a performance boost up to the 1024MB mark?

If you are running 3 sticks of ram then you will force your setup to run single channel. If your running 2 or 4 sticks you can run dual channal.

Yes, I have 2 sticks but they are not the same size. Is it better to run them as single or dual channel?

That is not so. If you check the manual for the A7N8X-E, on page 2.9 the table reports you can run dual channel with all three dimm slots populated.

IIRC, you are correct. When inserted in the proper slots, you will get dual channel on the first 1GB section of memory. The remaining 512MB will be accessed in single channel mode. It's a very unusual setup.

3 sticks in dual channel is also completely doable with nforce2. To ensure all is in dual channel mode, channel A = channel B.

I would not bother with Dual channel with a socket A board. The performance gain isnt worth it as it is minimal (I think it was less than 5%)
