To get two PIII and PC133 Ram support what are my chipset choices?
Is VIA the only one?
does the 815 support SMP and PC133 ram?

I am looking to stay at 133FSB so that nothing runs out of spec(IE 440BX AGP..)

i just had a hand in buildin one:
ecs D6VAA form ATX , chipset VIA694X & 686B
2 x p3 933 cpus
512 sdram
geforce 2 32mg graphics card
running win 2k
Only prob setting up was board was set for pci graphics not agp when we bought it , luckily we had a pci card as well as the geforce

Supermicro make a bundle of dual P3 motherboards based on the Serverworks chipsets - vastly superior to the Via offerings. Course, they're also twice the price :)

I am not familliar with serverworks.
Do they make the chipset and the board?

the 686 south bridge has a problem doesn't it?
also don't the via chipsets have problems with soundblaster sound cards?
Don't all VIA chipsets need to have the 4-in-1 drivers running. I have not seen a 4-in-1 driver for linux yet.

Thank you for your time and have a good day

I just built a real cheapie!

RioWorks PDVIA Dual Slot 1 VIA 694A - $44
Dual PIII 700's @ 980 MHz - $200
Two Asus S370-DL Slotkets - $26
Two CoolerMaster CM5-5G12 all copper H/S fans - $15 each
256MB Cheap CAS2 PC133 @ 140 MHz - $58
Adaptec 2940UW - $35
Two Seagate ST39140W 9.1 GB SCSI 7200 rpm hard drives - $30 each
Toshiba 32X SCSI CD-ROM - $24
Yamaha 8x4x24x CD-R/RW - $59

Runs like a dream. I picked up a Visiontek GeForce2 GTS 32MB DDR AGP card for $84 that's coming in on Friday. Then I'll be picking up an SBLive! OEM card locally for $47 to finish it off. Later, when I need it, I'll add a either big new IDE drive or a big old 5400 rpm SCSI drive for file storage.

UPDATE - I've added the Visiontek GeForce2 GTS 32MB DDR AGP and an SBVLive! 5.1 OEM sound card for anothe $52. Both installed with no problems and the rig runs great! No problems running 3DMark2001 with a score of 3,000.

The VIA 686 problems have been ironed out. The file transfer problem was due to the SB Live problem. The last press release from VIA stated that it was only apparent when AMD cpu's were used.

This is crap because I have personally seen it happen on Intel chips also.

But the newest 4-in-1's have fixed this problem.

I have a 686 on my VP-6. I have seen no problems on my board. No clicks and hisses from my SB. No file transfer problems. It is stable and is a great board.

I think that everyone is just gun shy of VIA. People get so set on their hardware they don't want to change. Same with anything with an ATI label on it......

Abit's VP6 Motherboard is a GREAT mobo! if you want dual cpu's, this is the way to go!!! the stability is awesome for those cool coppermine PIII's, and far superior to their BP6 mobo. I've heard no complaints on this mobo except that extra usb connector to the mobo that is too short to fit above the agp, but let's not get into that! but anyways, i know you can get this mobo for atleast $165 U.S., and SoftMenu Bios with great features, so this is a must get for you dual cpu people out there!!!!

I am in the middle of a decision as to which dualie board to buy as well. Interesting note: ACORP just came out with a board "based on" the i815 chipset, meaning they hacked it. It supports dual PIIIs. I spoke to one of their sales folks (nice guy BTW) and he said the board is just going into mass production and is going to give me a call when they have them. They also plan on "adapting" the new i815 stepB chipset to support dual tualatins. Now that would kick ***. From reports, I think I am going to get a VP6. The MSI and ASUS boards don't seem to support the OC user very well. Off to the LA computer this weekend I guess.

Also I looked at the IWILL board as well, but I have to go out and buy DDR RAM, and performance is not that much faster than PC133.
