Hi, I need some advice quite quickly, and this board is the best place to get it.

I have been offered 2 3.2 800fsb 1mb cache xeon chips for a very cheap price. $400 for both (australian $$) and from what I can see, these chips are worth around $800 each or $1600 for both, so I am pretty interested.

Firstly, they come in a plain brown box. They are in plastic static bags, each bag un-opened with a square of very soft padding inside to protect pins (padding is red in color). Then, in the box is also 2 flat silver heat sinks, no fans, and a intel installation booklet in a bag as well. Does this sound normal, such as a bulk oe method of packaging to companies or what? Or is this repackaged after the fact?

I have seen the chips, still in bags, and they look legit, with correct markings on heat spreader. They are brand new. I do know the bloke well, so suspision is little, but just want to check it out with you guys. They are obviously under the counter jobs, this was made clear - lol. I also have no way or testing before buying, as I don't have access to a xeon compatible board.

So, I also know little about other required hardware to run them, and don't have the time to research it too well, need to make a call soon, or may miss out.

What boards do these chips need, and could someone suggest a good quality one to run them, and I would like to be able to o/clock them. I think they need ecc memory, is that correct? The 800 fsb chips run 400ddr do they, or is there something different here? This would be a home pc, so don't need all the stuff you would normally only find on server boards. But I want a board that performs well, gives all benefits of the dual config, and o/clocks. Do they need a special p/supply, and if so, do they attract a premium? Will all my pci cards work no prob? WHat about graphics cards? Board should have raid 0 for PATA as well if possible. What else am I missing here?? So I know what I am up for before I get deep into the S&^T!

Also, just in my quick blind browsing, I see mention to two way chips? or something like that, but I only was that listed against 533 fsb chips. What is this, and does that matter? As you see, I know nothing!

Thanks for any help, and sorry for urgency, I usually feel more comfortable after spending a week or two researching these things myself before I buy, but don't have this luxury this time round.

Cheers Greg

I would post in the SMP section for more info.

I'm a little behind the times, but last year one of the better dual proc mobos that allowed overclocking was the Asus PC-DL Deluxe. Get the s-spec off the top of the processor and compare it to this official Intel list.

Sounds like it's been repackaged. OEM will not have a heatsink and retail will have an official Intel box.

sorry batboy your a little uninformed here. Well if they are 800fsb then they are nocona, and the best ocing board is the NCCH-DL. As you can see in my sig I own the board, and similar chips. With the NCCH-DL normal non ecc and non registered ram is fine. You do need a server psu, by far the cheapest is the fortron in my sig. It can be had for about 90$+ shipped in my sig. NCCH-DL's manual says you need a 600W PSU, but many have ran 550W PSU no problem. These psus have 24 pin main power, a 4 power pin and an 8 power pin. Some people have used adaptors on there normal ATX psus, but I would strongly recommend and EPS12V PSU. I believe the board has PATA raid but I am not sure. All your PCI cards will work fine, although there is only 2 PCI slots. Your AGP card will also work fine.

Also recommended reading is the Xeon Thread. http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=329096 this will give you a ton of info.

I have an Iwill DH800 and I like it. If you do more than gaming you will like the dual Noconas. I wish someone would offer me chips that cheap!
