dvd drive problem

hello all

i got a 4x dvd a while ago

and during the last few days
when ever i put in a cd it just hangs for a noticable while ( 45 second to a min)

its weird it hangs the whole window in the os too

and then it will load the screen

and ill slect a folder or something and it will hang again

but all the other drives (c and such load fine

its just the dvd


anyideas on what might be wrong?

I would say low memory, but your other drives are fine. Other thinks to look at would be the IDE Cable, is it ATA33/66/100or133?. Is the drive on it's own controller. If it's not, try putting it on it's own, with nothing on the slave and see if it changes. Now that i'm thinking, that's a kinda tough one. All i can think of is a windows problem (reinstall maybe?) or a faluty drive. Although i've had mine do that before with scratched CD's. It just sat there trying to seek.

Try this. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Goto the performance tab. Where it says Physical Memory (K) what is the reading for Available?

memory is not a problem the gragh is almost scraping the bottom

I have had this problem happen with cd-rom drives before, and it always turned out that the drive was defective and had to be replaced. If cleaning it doesn't help, you might want to look into getting a new drive.

well its the dvd or the 6x cdrom

im going to intall teh 6x anyway as soon as i find a ribbon with an extra connector ( all mine only have 1 for some reason)

but unfortuanlty this computer does not get replacement parts
