Which is more compatible w/ home dvd players and computer dvd roms?

I heard DVD+R is more advanced than DVD-R but DVD-R sells far more numbers compared to DVD+R.

Each form of media will play equally well, but DVD-R recorders are more expensive (but the media very cheap), while DVD+R recorders are cheaper but their media is a lot more (like triple the price).

No, I don't know why DVD+R exists. :p

DVD-R

DVD-R is much more popular and more towards an industry standard (Really no set standard yet) than the DVD+R. I would get the DVD-R if you cannot find/afford a burner that will do both.

Exactly.

Well, the burner I was looking at supports both DVD+R and -R

i have a -r pioneer a04. got it for 200$ from newegg refurbs about an hour before there was an a05(4x as opposed to my 2x)for the same darn price just a few months ago, i have yet to find a player that wont play my disks though. will burn a full disk in 30ish minutes and i get a 50pack spindle at a local comp store for 40$ on sale from time to time. if you want to read about who backs +r and who backs -r it can be found at vcdhelp.com.

yeah, they and a few other sites helped me learn how to make playable disks. just a tip, nero sucks for burning dvd-r, i had to tweak settings to play disks in some players and they just would not play at all in my portable dvd player. got prassi primo dvd and now my disks play in everything i have tried
