I don't recomend the DS3 or S3 unless your budget doesn't allow for a ICH8R or ICH7R southbridge motherboard, no Matrix Raid. :(

Is lack of matrix raid the only reason? I only ask this because I don't plan on using raid any time soon. I'll probably deal with seek times by getting a hybrid drive at some point. As soon as Seagate releases a perp\hybrid drive I'm all over it.

i stand by my ab9-pro i even have a review in the abit section.... the revision BB talks about hit retail sometime after july when they started shipping. the new revision spots a high vdimm of 2.5 and better clocking. mine is one of the first and has a poor pll. since the fsb wont no matter what go over 396mhz. i do plan here soon to replace it to get a higher oc on the e6400 i have, sitting on stock volts at 3ghz. the problems of the board where early bios's and trouble getting the timings to come up. mainly though the board would boot with a low 1.8v dimm which is fixed in later bios's since alot of high speed ram needs more volts just to boot. just my thoughts for the money there is no better board then the ab9-pro. the closest one's to it are the asus p5b-e and the biostart tforce p965-dlx(which is not here in the states yet).

@greenmaji-Thanks for the link, it looks pretty impressive. Definitely cool but I don't need it quite enough to buy 2 new hard drives. The only thing that bothers me about my current hard drive is the little pauses during gaming, mainly Oblivion. I assumed that was a seek time issue due to constantly loading small chunks during fast motion between outdoor areas. It would be nice to encode a movie in 2 minutes but 7 minutes is good enough for me. When I have more money to play with I'll probably look into it.
@Evilsizer&Greenmaji-I think the AB9 is winning me over if the new one is that much better. I'm beginning to gravitate towards the AB9pro, Gskill pk's($225 ones), and an E6400. I figure if I'm lucky I'll get 420mhz out of the board and ram putting me at(lemme think) 3360mhz(right?:eh?:) which is great. It'll save me about $150 over an E6600\P5W-dh or similar and will surely fly.

Thats why I recomended the AB9-Pro.. plenty of FSB, reasonbly priced for having matrix raid as an option in the future.

matrix raid actually improves seeks, reads, writes and load times..

The Geil I linked is $220 ;)

Anybody know if the Geil ultra works with the ab9-pro? I checked abit and geil websites and came up with nothing. According to abit's site, the board isn't even compatable with an E6400. Serious lack of information there.

yes it will be find the defualt vdimm on the ab9/ab9-pro's is 2v.

Not exactly correct. Default multiplier and FSB for the E6600 is 9X266, so 420 FSB would net you 3.78 gig. The E6600 hits 3.6 gig at 400 FSB. Not many rigs with air cooling will go past that point.

I meant with the E6400.

Ok, I think I'm going to order tomorrow. I found someone to buy my old cpu\mobo\ram and who also wants to pay me to put it together with a new system for her. The money's almost lined up, heres the final build.

E6400
2gb Geil Ultra pc6400 ddr2 w\orange heatspreaders
Abit Ab9-pro motherboard
TT Big Typhoon

If anyone has reason to believe I won't hit 420fsb or so stable, please stop me. Thanks again everyone.

as found out the ab9-pro does not force a 1333 strap above 400mhz like the p5b's do. this is more then likly why we are not currrently seeing 500mhz ab9's. might have to get people with ab9's to post in abit forums for them to add the 1333fsb strap to the bios.

No big deal on the 500fsb thing. If I get 3400mhz I'll be happy as hell. The advice is much appreciated, I think I'll go for it.

The order is in, and my credit card is maxed out. If fedex didn't want $40 more
I'd be able to build it this weekend but alas I'll probably have to wait until monday for ups to get here. I ended up chickening out and getting the gskill because of the overwhelmingly negative reviews of the geil ram. Plus, a couple people say they got the gskill to 900+ mhz and I saw some posts by people using them with the same motherboard that I got so I feel a little reassured. Now I just wait. Thanks for putting up with me.
