i just got those geil sticks delivered last night. Keep an eye in this intel section to see how they clock.

The order is in, and my credit card is maxed out. If fedex didn't want $40 more
I'd be able to build it this weekend but alas I'll probably have to wait until monday for ups to get here. I ended up chickening out and getting the gskill because of the overwhelmingly negative reviews of the geil ram. Plus, a couple people say they got the gskill to 900+ mhz and I saw some posts by people using them with the same motherboard that I got so I feel a little reassured. Now I just wait. Thanks for putting up with me.
Read new egg reviews for comedic content only, come here for buying advice..

Some of the most solid hardware (that is still being recomended by some of the most knolegble members here) I know of has had negitive reviews at newegg at one point in time or another.. In the case of that ram it appears that users didn't have enough Vdimm or didnt try more then 1.8Vdimm on them.
IE.. Ram problem between monitor and keyboard.

I guess a big part of it was seeing a couple people using the gskill with the ab9-pro successfully. Last time I bought ram I couldn't go through with it until I saw a compatability chart or some other evidence that showed it would work with my motherboard. I didn't find a chart this time but I saw a couple successful examples of this particular combination which to me is better than nothing. What can I say? I'm still a noob.

my geil sticks booted stock with 1.8v just fine last night, btw. (Tforce965PT board)

Well, maybe I'm a sucker but at the very least I'll get 400fsb which is great. Plus, we can compare ram for the education of others so they won't have to wonder like me.

guessing they'll top out around ddr2-900...but you never know. ;)

you'll reach your goals and have some room to spare.

yep, we'll definitely have to compare numbers. I plan on fully testing my geil sticks to see how high it can clock and what timings I can get. I'm thinking I'll be lucky to get 450mhz, but after I just read thru a thread on another forum about a guy taking his Xeon 3050 to 4ghz on air (HUGE heatsink), I'm dreaming of 500mhz fsb...

@splat: That GeIL might have gone though a IC cycle.. If it was new results then it might be accurate to your sticks but if they were months old I would ignore it.

just got my geil sticks to 435mhz on cas5 timings without errors in memtest on test 5 10 passes. 2.1v. I think i could get them higher if i drop the timings more.

i think my psu is crapping out on me. I'll bump up the voltage some more and see if i can take the ram higher.

I got everything put together and hit the power button but it only stayed on for a few seconds. The next couple of tries stayed on even shorter. Finally, pushing the power button has no effect. I'm going to try grounding the green wire on the 24 pin connector to find out if it's the power supply. If so, I think I'll rma it and buy a modular 600w(suggestions?) then sell the seasonic's replacement when it gets here.. If not, I guess I'll rma the board and get an asus commando or something. I don't know. This sucks.

EDIT: The green wire power on trick worked so I guess it's the motherboard. I didn't think I was pushing the power supply enough to kill it.
EDIT AGAIN: Holy crap! Nevermind the commando. Just saw the price. I'll probably just replace with another ab9-pro.
EDIT YET AGAIN: AAAHHH HA HA HA HA!!!! I just ironed another wrinkle out of my newb suit. The 24 pin connector wasn't in all the way. It was one of the first things I checked but when I seated the connector I did it by feel instead of looking at it closely from the side. What I thought was the bottom side of the connector clicking in was the extra +4 pin detachable piece. The inner side of the main plug was a wee bit crooked. It works!!! Yaaaaaay! On to testing.

I did a quick and dirty test on the memory by turning it up 1 mhz at a time with uguru. The computer restarted at 439mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2.0volts. Putting the ram @ 2.1v got me stuck in a reboot loop until I put it back to 2.0v in bios. I was surprised to find out that uguru actually changes the bios settings making it a pain in the @$$ to reboot when you crank it too high. What's the point if I have to go into bios anyways? Maybe theres a way to tell it to reset on reboot but I didn't see it right off hand. I'll try to figure it out.
EDIT:So far so good with a first mild overclock of 2680mhz(335fsb) w\[email protected](shows 1.3) and mobo mch @1.35.
Memory at 419mhz 4-4-4-12 and 2.0v. Going on 45 minutes orthos stable at priority 5 so I can actually turn it off when I want to. Cpu temp hovers around 65c with stock cooler @ 1680rpm. Pwm is @49c. My apartments central air is set to 70f.
EDITAGAIN: 3Dmarko5 stable. Time to slap on the big typhoon.

Sooo veerrryyy tiirrred. I reinstalled the big typhoon 3 times and for some reason my system always turns off after a few seconds when it's installed. I thought I'd broken something but when I reinstalled the stock cooler it started right up. If you get this motherboard DON'T BUY A BIG TYPHOON. I think the heatpipes might be touching a capacitor near the base. I'm sending it back for a Tuniq 120.

EDIT: On closer inspection it looks like a tuniq 120 will fit even worse than the typhoon. The chipset heatsinks and capacitors are just too close to the socket. I think I'll cancel the rma and take it apart to see if theres something I can file down on the typhoon.

I tried. I really did. I took the motherboard out, set the heatsink on the cpu, and looked at it from every angle. Nothing was blocking it or touching it whatsoever. I used the paste that came with the typhoon just so I knew I was doing it by the book. I made sure every mounting pin was all the way through and the heatsink was snug. I put it back together and triple checked every connection, then pressed the power button. Once again, it only stayed on for a few seconds just like every other time I tried with the typhoon attached. Something is fundamentally wrong with this motherboard if it can't boot with a tiny bit of flex. I'm going to try to talk newegg into swapping it for a p5b-deluxe like I should have gotten in the first place. Why am I talking to myself? Nevermind.

if the mobo is flexing then you need to find a backplate to keep it from flexing. im not sure how the bt's mount as i dont use one. im using the older ninja with the 478 clips. no problems but then i have a back plate in place. the ab9-pro is a goob board i dont know why you would be having this problem. head over to abit's forums first before rma'ing the board and see how many others with the ab9/bt combo. i would hate to see you get the p5b-dlx just to have the same problem and it just cost you more money. GL :)
