E6400 build advice?

I hope I'm not being a bee-otch about this but I'm just tired of it. I didn't see anything about a backplate on thermaltakes site and I'd like to think they tried out the typhoon out a few times on some 775 motherboards before they decided to mass produce and sell it. Maybe they didn't but it seems unlikely. Besides, when you add the near $20 I put out for an extra long rounded IDE cable that could reach the far-away IDE port, you're within spitting distance of a p5b-deluxe which seems to have a proven track record around here. I don't know. It's been a long week and I want my system to work, that's all. I am glad yours is working out though.

I think if the cooler was grounding something, the computer wouldn't even start up. I guess board flex might be a possible problem, but I think there are people using that same board with other equally as big aftermarket coolers that aren't having any problems. I don't have the board so I can't offer too much advice. Like Evilsizer said, I'd check out the abit forums or ask a question here in the motherboard section about your problem.

btw, I got my Geil sticks up to 446mhz @ 2.2v (1:1). I think they can go higher if I could pump more Vdimm to them.

Would this build be just as good with an e6600? I'm having trouble settling on a motherboard. The aw9d is gorgeous but pricey and has a lot of features I dont really need. Seems like the ab9 might be a better choice for me. I plan to use the rig for gaming almost exclusively and I'll OC it for sure. I like Abit but I read they cater more to ATI cards and I plan to use the 8800GTX.

I might try Raid due to the discussion page's thread but maybe not right off the bat. Probably not SLI though. SLI gtx's sounds like crazy talk to me.

Also Brando I'm not trying to steal you're thunder here. If these questions are considered jacking your thread somebody set me straight. I'll check back to see if you got that Ab9 working and if anyone thinks this would be a good spec for my new rig.

I work in surgery and we have computers all over but I might only have time to read the posts. I may not be able to post back until after work.

I checked the abit forums. I didn't read every post but I looked at everything that seemed remotely related. I read all the sigs I could find and the only aftermarket cooler I saw being used was a zalman 9500. I googled "ab9-pro heatsink" and came up with nothing immediate. If I looked longer I'm sure I'd run across something but information is relatively scarce because not many people seem to have this mobo. I have nothing against it but the fact that it won't boot with my typhoon which prevents overclocking which ....is very frustrating. It seems to be 100% cause and effect. Every single time I mount the typhoon it shuts down before it can even get to bios. I removed everything to make sure it was mounted flat but no go. Pretty much everything else about it is fine but this is a deal breaker if I can't oc. Maybe if I got another ab9-pro it'll work fine but I really don't want to rma twice and waste neweggs money. They're being really cool about it and sending me a shipping label. They're even waiving the restocking fee. I want to get it right this time.

have you tried running it outside of your case? say, sitting on the box the board came in, with the BT mounted?

No, I didn't try it outside the case. I should have but I didn't think of it and I've been pretty busy. If the same thing happens with the p5bdeluxe I think I'll get rid of the typhoon and buy something with a backplate. I tried searching for info on a backplate for the typhoon vx but apparently it isn't supposed to need one and I can't find one. I'll either trade it in for an old style typhoon with backplate and mounting screws or a tuniq 120. Hopefully it just works as is like it's supposed to. This has been a learning experience. I don't mean to smear the abit name and it seems like a good board in other circumstances but it's not working out. If this ends up being thermaltakes fault for making a stupid heatsink I'll send them a nasty email and apologize to the patron saint of abit.

Are you plugging the BT fan into the motherboard header? Try swapping out the fan on it if you have a spare 120 laying around. Or even and 80 or 90. Just try a fan besides the stock TT fan and see if it isn't trying to short out your fan header. Could be a dud fan shorting the fan header and the motherboard trying to save itself by shutting down...

I never use mobo headers since I have a sunbeam rheobus. The bt has a built in fan controller so I hooked it to a 12v line going straight to the supply. I also considered that maybe the board needs to sense cpu fan rpm's to activate so I plugged the stock cooler into the cpu fan header and set it next to the computer with the typhoon mounted. I even did the opposite and mounted\plugged in the stock cooler, then plugged in the typhoons fan to the power supply and set it to the side to see if I was using too much juice. The only common thread to the no-boot issue is having the typhoon mounted on the cpu.

The p5b-deluxe came in and I finally just now got it up and running with the big typhoon. I don't know what the deal was with the abit but it could very well have been that particular board. Maybe I wasn't mounting the cooler right or something but I remounted it several times without success and it worked the first time around with the new asus. Anyways, I think I'm good to go. I haven't used it long but the new system seems to be doing good so far. Lots of bios settings to figure out. Thanks to everyone that tried to help me out.
