Extremetech had a early review and I am a bit concerned over this quote..

"Note that the 955 Extreme Edition CPU isn't actually available yet. Although Intel launched the new CPU on December 27th, the actual ship date for systems using Presler is January 16th. Boxed retail CPUs will likely not be available until February.

Given the high cost of the CPU and its staggering heat output, it's difficult to recommend this new Intel CPU. Intel does have a track record of issuing CPU revisions that improve on thermal output and die sizes, so the 955 may improve in the future. "

annnnnndd........where's the link?

i think to compare a 955 to a 4400+ is silly. i'm sure a 930 will hit similar clocks at a fraction of the price of both the 955 and the 4400+. now if only some members here had them, we would know what "similar clocks" meant. ;)

Flip-mode that may be so but a 4400+ wont overclock to 5ghz on good air/okay water and 6ghz on a stock Mach 2 vapo ;)

Also while it seems to use alittle more power than expected something is up with extremetechs thermal monitoring becuase nowhere else have I seen number like that.

WOW!! That new chip is on the warm side. I wonder how they intend to get that under control. 95°C is warm even for a Intel. The last link, shows a test date of January. I could not imagine what temps a user under normal home conditions in August would experiance.

True but how does it compare to a overclocked X2 4400?

Don't know and this is not the proper forum for AMD vs. Intel is it? This thread is not titled 4400 vs 955 is it? So stop now.

Clock speed isn't everything. I thought people already got this by now. ;)

Oh btw guys its a X2 4800+ there comparing it to, and rightfully so since its AMD's top dog currently til the FX-60 comes out.

of course we all get this......but sometimes, its fun to OC to high numbers, ok?

Did you NOT see my warning to Flip-Mode? This is NOT AMD vs Intel. If anyone continues this, bad things will happen. Please stop NOW.

when it says "staggering heat output", surely presler is cooler running than smithfield 8xx chips? im really hoping 9xx dual cores will be cool enough to get decent OC's on mid range water cooling....

Seem odd that it runs hotter than a smithfield, Intel and AMD don't usually lie outright about things like TDP, they just come up with funny stats that don't show what's going on. Some problem with an ES chip and a beta board maybe?

hey come on, this is a discussion of a review article, and that article compares the 955 with the 4800, so unless you are having a wholly technical discussion about the design elegance (or otherwise) of dual core netburst CPUs any sensible discussion is inevitably going to mention the comparisons of the 4800 vs 955.

I know so many threads descend into a near slagging match of AMD v Intel, but the best intel chip is only any good if it's good compared with the best AMD chip and vice versa.

the op was talking about heat output as it compares to previous Intel chips. he made no mention of anything amd.

not everyone in the intel side cares about how certain intel chips stack up with certain amd chips. not every thread should be about that. if that is a topic you wish to discuss, i invite you to make a thread in the general cpu section.

I would think the referance to another brand of CPU is purley to give a point to go by. If the review was standing alone the numbers would not look as good. The title of the article is actually called Intel Pentium 955 Extreme Edition not 955 versus 4800 or even 955 versus 840.

Discussing heat and other enhancments would be a neat thing. Input over the last CPU or possible thoughts on the design are more important than focusing on the comparision. That is a small part of the review actually. It also compares agianst an 840 Intel.

It seems the leaky issue is still on the design table for Intel. The article did reference that the next gen is doing something for this. Seems this round is typical. Give a boost to performance and heat. I am wondering when Intel will get the leaky voltage issue fixed.

Thank you for saying exactly what I was going to :D

Yes, if heat is your major concern and you want dual-core, you may want to look at Yonah or even wait for Conroe to arrive.

If you don't necessarily need dual-core, I doubt the single-core Cedar Mill's will have quite the same heat issues, given what I have read about them thus far (and, of course, single-cores will run cooler, reguardless). There's a few articles floating about at some of the major review sites with info pertaining to this.
