Not for temperature display.
For MM5 and bios temperature readout the in socket diode is used.

For overtemperature shutdown the XP internal diode is used (where avalable)

This is the guy that would know. Apparently, Epox has modified their approach as to not freak people out with displays of high CPU temps.

And what a shame too... Whinny ppl should buy another kind of motherboard instead of complaining of high temps when they dont even know why they have them... Shame on you Epox, if i'd known i wouldnt have bought the one i have now.
