Epson Perfection 16XX and WinXP problem

Hi!
Has anyone dealed with such a scanner? It disappeares periodically from the Device Manager, makes strange beeps (in the Safe Mode too) and I cannot delete the references to the drivers in registry.

Any suggestions????

I have the Epson Perfection 610 it works fine with XP but I had to download the XP drivers from the Epson site.
