Was just browsing Ubid and saw a Via Processor. from what I read, it looked like old technology, socket 370, but on a .13 and .15 micron. It was called the "Via C3 933 mhz on a Soyo SY7Vem mobo. Just kinda struck me funny, I've never seen a Via processor. Maybe I just need to venture outside my box a little more often.

Of course. You may know them better by the name Cyrix. :) Via bought Cyrix a couple of years back. They also bought IDT/Centaur. The C3 is an all right processor for standard stuff, but if you're interested in 3d gaming, stay the heck away.

One big advantage of the C3 is that it runs very cool. I'm talking passive cooling only type cool. No fan needed. That makes it really great for, say, an MP3 box or home theater PC type of system.

You know, something about what I read kinda gave me the impression it might have been a Cyrix. I don't really know anything bout Cyrix though. Guess ya learn something new everyday. I think I alraedy surpased that for the day though, hope I have ruined the rest of my week!:D

I have a via 550 and I don't know to much about it but I was going to use it on folding and see how it works?

Very slowly. See if you can throw a coppermine celeron in that rig... it will do wonders over the Via C3 550

sure, you cant forget via, aka cyrix. but they offer upgrading for people who cant afford a new fully powered processor. there slower than an celeron. so go for the coppermine :)

Claytocomp u should run a few benchmarks and publish them in the forums with ur system specs. Alot of people are asking about the value of them. If you're adventurous try to oc it. Let us know.

Most reviews show them only being good for internet and buisness though.

C3 processors could be very useful for silent folding rigs. No fans needed, low power use - you can stick them in a corner and not know that they are there :).

but the issue is...can a 550mhz C3 complete the units in time?...according to Sandra a 667mhz C3 gets completely smacked around by a Celeron 266...thats right 266 no cache.....it about as fast as a 233MMX Pentium1...

hmmm...good point.

So how can via actually list these for sale as a bla bla 550 if they're really not comparing to anything even close? Isn't there some kinda regulatory commision or underwriters laboratory that verifies these things? I mean, whats to stop Intel or Amd from putting procs on the market that they claim to be .... but really be ....

VIA is calling the C3 by its speed in MHz.
You dont want to use a PR RATING if it will hurt your CPU, make it look slower.

Thier should be a commision to regulate these things...
But since this is not, you just have to rember
MHz MEAN NOTHING.

AMD is currently selling with a PR ratting.
All of the XP line of AMD CPU have a PR RATTING

Here's a very good review of VIA's new Ezra core, the heart of the C3 CPU.

It's sure not a speed demon, but it's not supposed to be- it's made for imbedded computing applications, as well as low-cost low-noise systems.

A C3 is more than enough CPU to run an MP3 box or firewall!:D

It's not fast, but it is new and different and comes in a plastic tube instead of a box. I want one!
