Evidently I am an idiot when it comes to computers

Hmm I have a similar story,
This kid I know asks me to recomend which ram he should get for his computer. Its an older gateway and it couldnt take anything higher than PC-133 so I tell him to get SD-RAM. He gets it at his house and insists the ram won't fit into the slot and now hes telling me he needs DDR ram. I've been trying to avoid him since

You want to know about the most moronic build i've ever done for someone? Well... I told the guy what exactly to get. Very good rig for the time. Cant recall what the specifics were.

So he gets all the junk and calls me up asking me to come slap it together. SO I make the half hour drive to his house and start assembling it. It all goes well, and I start it up for the first time, going through the WindowsXP installer to format the HD to ready it for the OS installation.

So I have to take a leak, and leave the computer laying on its side, open and running, with my friend lookin at it in interest. And then i'm taking a leak, and all of a sudden i hear my friend screaming from the other room to come out quick and help him.

The guy had dropped his open can of soda into the computer, and the whole thing ended up shorting itself out upon later trial after I gave the thing a bath and a drying.

I cant stand it when people are not careful around their equipment.

Oh dear god. I wouldnt have been as calm as you about that ordeal. I would have told him that hes f***ed and left. I have very little patience when people ask for help then screw something up when they dont listen to me or try to experiment.

I got my parents well conformed now to avoid changing settings without knowing what they do first.

As for rigs for other people I say go for something simple(KISS). If it has problems and requires the cmos to be reset then give em something that should default at the right settings. Awesome computer be damned. They can do the same with a stock 3000+ as a mild mobile OC without the hassle of adjusting 10 settings and having to call some airhead that has no clue what he/she is doing.

Even a crappy hand picked system should run better then most dells and other big name crap fests.

*edit*
Either that or give them a long checklist of every setting you changed from start to finish and how they can repeat it if they needed to.

Unfortunately, most people can't follow even the simplest of instructions.
