ok heres my idea/dilemma.
i have an alpha heatsink on my athlon xp1800 and an 80 mm delta fan. since i have the fan blowing away from the hs instead of into it, i would like to make an exhaust duct that just blows the air straight out the side of my case. my plan is to get a piece of pvc that is of equal diameter to the fan and attach it somehow and then cut a hole on the side of my case the same diameter as the pvc and have it exhaust there.
is there a simple way or piece i can use to attach a piece of pvc to the fan? is this idea just plain retarded?
any input is appreciated.
thanks.

well it all sound good:D

iv never heard of ppl blowing away from hs but thz my fault im not around the cooling forum much

i would think this would be better for u

instead of having it attached to the fan attach it to the case. i dont know how long this is but it is probly long enough[unless u have a wide case] it would also look better

all u have to do is line it up with ur hsfan

:)

a posibly cheaper version [what i have for my front blow hole] is get a insert for a subwoofer box its the exact same thing and u should be able to get it locally cheaper

any way have fun

post pics

good luck

yeah i hadnt heard of blowing away from the hs either until i got the alpha, and blowing out instead of in actually lowered my temp about 2 degrees.
i like the duct there at pcmods and may go for that, the only reason im pursuing the pvc approach is that i have a case made of plexi and found some clear pvc and think it would look real cool if i stayed with the clear motif.
i'll see what i can work out and defenitely post some pics when its all finished.

Alphas do suck the air away from the HSF, one of the few designed to do so. Having a clear plexi case kind of limits your attachment options as far as having it look decent.

ohhh i see where u commen from maby if u get the pcmods or subwoofer insert[same] then u could cut it realy short and attach the clear pvc then all u would have is the black ring around the hole and a clear tube bhind it

If you are going to use PVC, then I would go to a hardware store and get the compression fitting that is used to hold the drain pipe under a sink.

If someone had a clear case mod, the same thing could be done with chrome pipe for a neat look.

after a little more research here's what i think im gunna try this weekend. i found clear plexi that comes in a square tube. they had a few different sizes, so im keeping my fingers crossed that when i go back with my fan i can get one thats the same width as my delta fan(80 mm). the i'm going to cut 4 little right triangles and drill a hole in the middle of each one and then glue them to the inside of the tube. that way i can put a screw through the holes and screw it into the holes on the fan. then on the other side of the tube i was thinking i could get a square piece of plexi that is a little bigger than the tube and cut a square in the middle of it the size of the tube and glue them together. i could then drill wholes in that and the side of my case and screw them together.

i drew a sloppy pic to help tie all my rambling together.

anyone think it'll work? any improvement ideas?
