Now im trying to reach 4ghz and I can do it, but I dont feel comfortable with upping the volts past 1.4v. I need some advice on other things to try besides jacking up core voltage. I already gave the dimms 2.1v as required and bumped up fsb and northbridge by one notch. So far it is stable at 3.8ghz with 1.36v. That seems like a lot for under 4ghz. It will boot into Windows just fine at 4ghz but will not last more than a few seconds under Orthos.

Also and this one puzzles me, is the voltages in this screenshot:

My +12v is really low and it will fluctuate all the way down to 1v! This is the same reading im getting in all the programs. Bios reads it at 12.33v and under full load my multimeter reads 12.19 at the mobo connector. Ive updated all the programs and the mobo bios is at f3. And even with awesome airflow and excellent cooler the cpu reads really hot. I used Artic ceramique and applied super thin, but still looks like crappy readings.

Any ideas?

Dave

Well I can't comment on the Gigabyte EX38-DS4, cuz I don't have one, but..
On my dfi/8400 coretemp doesn't give reliable readings at all. Maybe they updated the support for the Wolfdales, but my version does have support for it. Mine are stuck at 37/58. So coretemp doesn't work for me.
I can't remember where I read it but the "cpu temp" in speedfan is the one to use, that's what I go by anyway.
Go by what the dmm readings on the 12v read. That's the way to do it.

Nice cable/wire job:thup:

Edit: I just checked and they have come out with a newer version of coretemp than mine.. I'll have to give it a try.
Maybe I won't http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2830330

Yeah im not super concerned about the readings but it sucks im using more voltage than most to get a stable overclock. Im gonna reinstall the Os to try and get a fresh start.

Your voltage is at 1.32 so you should be good to go up to about 1.37 or 1.38. The BIOS setting is different than the actual output.

I now have it up to 3.9ghz with bios set at 1.35v and speedfan reading 1.34v. I could not get it stable at 4ghz no matter what. I had it up to a 1.38v in bios and it was reading 1.36v in speedfan. At that rate I would need to run probably 1.4v in bios which will be close to 1.39v actual reading. When stressed its not that bad but for normal tasks it will be putting 1.9v all the time. I just dont want to fry this chip too soon. If I can get it to last about 3 years then I'll put in whatever it takes, But it has to last at least that.
