Its funny... i was willing to go out and spend like... $450 on a cpu and board last month, but was UNWILLING to buy a new aftermarket heatsink for it.
Sometime in ... november i think, i baught a 947U from the classifieds here for about $15 us... thats cheap! except that it cost $15 usd to ship it.. money order ended up costing me $45 cdn and it only came with two screws and standoffs. well. that didnt matter at the time.

some come this new athlon 64 rig, i wanted to use it since it would be such a waste to not use it when the 948u is the same damn thing with two extra holes drilled in the hold down. my first mounting of this was kinda ghetto. and desperate.. I broke my stock cooling retention and was unable to mount the stock sink. i tried mounting the 947 untouched on the edges with screws... of course, this i wouldnt trust. only 45% of the screw top/washer was pushing down. i ended up with bent screws, and a threaded hold down. no good.
Of course, i wouldnt trust my next result any more than that for long term. the stock retention bracket... i cut it up and used the ends to hold down my 947's crossmember.. it worked.. but sooooo didnt want to go long term.

so i finally hooked up with my buddy out in the stix. he has access to some tools and viola, instant ghetto hold down, steve brand.

we got really lucky with this find, 1/4 aluminum stock. we cut that down witha hack saw and drilled the holes with a tabel drill. fun times =D

everyone loves temps, so.. my results.
on stock cooling, this thing ran 55º at 2500 mhz. 1.6 volts and 250x10 htt.
with the modded 947, im running those same 2500 mhz at the same 1.6 volts, but a load temp of 46º. thats hella nice.
the fan in the following pictures was jacked from a antec psu. nice quiet 92mm that cools ok.

i cant resist showing my stuff when i get my moms camera either, so here are some badly taken pics of my **** he he. i should buy my own digicam but.. im cheap and lazy.

this last pic is hard to make out, but it shows my two sticks of memory. the infamous rev 1.1 and the 1.2 im acutlly happy with. this 1.2 went to 300 htt 1-1 and i think with some more volts, might run better *2.85 volt cap*

im sure no one really cares ha ha. but i wanted to show my box. still all crammed into my super lanboy ^^

Awesome. I remember someone wanted to use his ALX800 on an A64 & I suggested something similar but the person never did it. Nice job!

nice solution :) iam my next step is to think of a cooling solution for my CPU instead of the stock cooler

thanks for the replies guys ^^. there isnt much modded about this thing atm but really, what can i do, i live in an appartment ha ha. i had tall these ideas to create custom airbrushing and various cooling mods, but couldnt be bothered. the next major planned mod will be water cooling, that wont happen untill i upgrade to a new core and probably a new mobo to go with it. oh, and a new gpu. Maybe a x800xl then who knows.

Temps are still settling though. and i have to lap this thing bad... also, can anyone point me in the right direction for removing the IHS? im thinking with the smaller base of the 947 that would be an ideal move. screw watantee, this 3200+ is gonna replace my barton 2500+ as the server when i upgrade, never to be resold.

Hmm, now that's being creative. One would think it'd run a little cooler than the temps you posted though, unless your Antec 92mm is a real slow fan. Nice job.

well. i attribute the higher temps to the crap that is built up on the base from applying and reapplying thermal paste and stuff. i dont have the stuff here to get the base perfectly clean, and it isnt lapped. so thats the next step. ill do that this weekend i think. HOPEFULLY my server will get here so ill have at least... music when i do that.. i kinda live alone and dont have cable or a stereo... so heh. 4 hour lap job... my mp3 player isnt that big ;)

in any event, this weekend im also going to test this thing out thouroghly to see what she can do in single channel. i wanted to see the difference between latency and high htt on athlon 64. there are lots of people doing it, but... im bored. i also dont play hl2 or d3.

I have a smart fan 2 ill use for my benching. that will get my temps even lower, but i couldnt live with that for more than a few hours after how quite this box is with the antec.
