Usually their will be markers on the CPU to indicate the right direction of which way it should be placed. Is that correct? Any rookie mistakes should I look out for? Thanks

Correct.

Umm, not that I can think of. Just check and double check your power is all plugged in properly and you should be good to go. Its like square peg in round hole simple for the most part. But I certainly understand the concern!
