How can you tell if a company is selling a first-gen 36GB Raptor or a second-gen? I know the seeks are different, but I'm wondering if there's any code or whatnot that can tell. Sorry if I missed this anywhere.

BTW...the second-gen 36GB drives have been released, right? It's not just the 74GB? Sorry, I've been a little out of the loop lately.

i hope they dont come out with one till the summer, cus i just picked myself up a raptor, and would be pretty ****ed off if a new one comes out soon :p

StorageReview posted that "there will be a corresponding single-platter unit, too"

I emailed WD and they said "there are no plans to release a new version of the 36Gb Raptor".

Well then, this makes the choice a little easier for some people. In just about every review for the 74gig that I read, they mentioned a newer version of the 36gig was going to be released. Smart idea asking the source instead of listening to these reviewers.

the 36 gig'ers work awesome in Raid 0! Besides if you run 2 74gig drives in Raid 0, and assuming you would want to run it as your boot drive why would you want a 140+gig boot drive?

36 gig x2 as a boot is perfect IMHO.

I'd like to just have one raptor, but now i'm afraid that as soon as I buy it the new raptor will come out

Look at the StorageReview benchmarks, both in performance and noise ;)

I wouldnt see any benifet in having 2 32gig rapters over the one 74.

2 raptoers = 2x the heat, noise etc.
